When AMD released the 'Lynx' desktop platform back in June 2011, our motherboard reviewer ran into some bad luck when overclocking the processor. When you get a new platform setup for the very first time you really don't know what to expect and it does take some time to learn all the quirks and nuances of a new processor and motherboard. We recently ordered in six more processors and then overclocked all seven of them to see what the best one would be for our test system!

The X79 is a favorite platform here in the Ninjalane Labs, we use it on our video card test benches and always have a system ready for multi GPU overclocking when multithreaded performance is important.

Athlon II X4 620 is the first quad-core CPU to be offered on the USD 100 range. Let's compare it one of its main competitors in price from Intel.

If you plan on buying an Intel Ivy Bridge processor we have an article that you have to read today! We have discovered an issue on Gigabyte motherboards that use the Intel 6-series of chipsets that is going to cause overclockers to cringe. Basically, the Gigabyte Z68 and P67 motherboards can't overclock Ivy Bridge processors as the CPU multiplier is locked due to BIOS limitations. This means that Intel 'k' sku processors like the Intel Core i7-3770K processor are stuck at a multiplier of 39 on these boards!

We all love doing computer upgrades, but sometimes we have to ask ourselves if a full system upgrade is worth it or necessary. There are times that you may only gain a small percentage of a performance boost, where there are other times that you gain significant increases. Today I am going to compare my original Intel Kentsfield CPU and X38 motherboard to a shiny new Haswell CPU and Z87 motherboard.

Last year Intel’s Sandy Bridge “TOCK” married the graphics processing unit (GPU) and CPU on the same die, making it a first class citizen in the system and introduced a true integrated processor graphics (IPG) solution. With HD audio bit steaming introduced in the previous generation, full hardware acceleration of VC-1, AVC (H.264), MPEG2 as well as 3D Blu-ray (MVC) and reasonable refresh rate accuracy already offered; Ivy Bridge’s 22nm die-shrinking “TICK” could have easily rested only on improved process technology for frequency gains or power efficiency, but instead promises a little bit of raw performance with significant reductions in consumption. Most importantly for the home theater PC (HTPC) enthusiast significant improvements to the GPU are also included - offering greater flexibility in playback software selection as well as improvements to the existing media consumption experience.

Today we'll take a closer look at AMD FX-8350, the top processor of the Vishera series and the first CPU to justify the Piledriver microarchitecture.
