There are many essential components to every computer – some perhaps are less important i.e. sound cards etc – but most are vital. One such component which the entire system depends on is the CPU; basically the CPU is the “heart” of the computer. But it is more than that, it is the component which performs programmed instructions, performs arithmetic and controls data input/output functions.

This article adds to the previous tests of the AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition. We wanted to compare different CPU coolers, try the new AMD Overdrive 3.0.2 and AMD Fusion For Gaming, and run a number of popular benchmarks from HwBot.org. Besides, out of curiosity and in order to obtain higher results, we also overclocked the AMD RADEON 4890 graphics card.

Do you leave your computer on all the time? If you've nodded yes to any of the above, it might be time to think about a more power-efficient processor. That's the idea behind AMD's Athlon II X2 240e. It's a 2.8GHz dual-core processor based on the AMD "Regor" core with a TDP of just 45W. The "e" behind the Athlon II X2 240e model name indicates that it's one of AMDs Energy Efficient processors. The Athlon II X2 240e has support for both DDR2 and DDR3 memory, depending on if the processor is dropped into a socket AM2+ or socket AM3 motherboard. Memory can be run at speeds of DDR2-1066 or DDR3-1333 via the Athlon II X2 240e's integrated memory controller.

Although AMD has had some exciting new mid- and entry-level chips come to market in the last several months, their top of the line Phenom II series has not seen much action since the beginning of the year. But since we won't see AMD's new six-core desktop Thuban processor emerge until next year, what we have to feed off of in the meantime is a new Phenom II core revision, the C3. Beginning with the highest-clocked chip, the 965 BE, the new core will begin to filter down through the rest of the lineup through next year. Enhancements to the core are expected to lower voltage requirements and thus reduce operating temperature, which can potentially lead to better, more stable overclocks. Is it worth the upgrade expense for a current Phenom II owner to make the change to the new revision though? Join me as I aim to find out!

A few years ago, owning a dual core processor was something to be particularly proud of. "Bring on the dual cores", we used to say, and joke around referring to the amount of power we could pack under the hood with AMD Socket 939 based Athlon X2 processors in Shuttle XPCs. We then lit up with a faint sense of superiority at the mentioning of then-nonexistent quad core CPUs for mainstream computing. But times have changed.

AMD releases its Athlon II X4 635 processor to the market with some interesting over-clocking capabilities.

Instead of following the flock of hardware reviewing websites and using a series of at least one hundred benchmarks to come the exact same conclusion, we decided to put Intel´s latest, codenamed Gulftown, to a series of extreme tests. Inside, you will find pictures, benchmark results and info on an extremely overclocked Gulftown B1.
