With AMDs' Llano and Bulldozer line releasing within 8 months of each other it was only a matter of time before we saw them merge. The main complaint about Llano was the inability to overclock anything. Well now we see 2 unlocked versions come into the market: the A8-3870k and the A6-3670k. With AMDs rich heritage in overclocking and GPUs what kind of performance can we expect out of these? Lets first take a look at the new line desktop Llano APUs.

AMD has gainedconsiderable market share in the budget computing segment since last year'slaunch of the Llano APU, with "good enough" CPUperformance balanced with entry discreet level graphics to boot. Afterthe uncompetitive showing of Bulldozer with theirFX enthusiast chips and Opterons, followed by harrowing departures ofhistorically key personnel, the remaining team went back to the drawingboard and made a few tweaks to their 32nm BD core architecture. Theirefforts resulted in Piledriver, which will debut with the2012 Trinity Mobile APUs today and then feature inserver and desktop product refreshes later this year. Is this the light atthe end of the tunnel or just another epic facepalm for AMD?

Recently AMD announced their next generation of APUs with Trinity branding heavily featured. This new range of chips enhances performance and features and first to market is the mobile range, followed later in the year by desktop parts. Today we have AMDs reference mobile platform on our test bench to find out how the new A10 range performs in a selection of real world tests.

Haswell is a new architecture based on an existing manufacturing process. That means it will have the 22nm Tri-Gate ‘3D’ transistors introduced with Ivy Bridge. The main enhancements of the CPU architecture come in the shape of new instructions (AVX 2) and support for transactional memory. The latter should make multi-threaded software run faster. The integrated GPU in the consumer models should also be a lot faster, and it will support DirectX 11.1. Intel is taking the integration of the chipset in the processor a step further, even releasing a complete system-on-a-chip (SoC) version of the processor.

In May AMD introduced its latest generation APUs codenamed Trinity for laptops, and today the desktop versions finally arrive. Last week we were only allowed to write about the hardware behind the new CPUs, the model numbers and the gaming benchmarks. Today, you get the full review, including CPU benchmarks and everything else.

AMD introduced its new FX-series processors almost exactly a year ago, and AMD enthusiasts hoped these Zambezi CPUs, built on AMD's new Bulldozer architecture, would provide real competition to Intel's Sandy Bridge line. But although the FX-8150 had eight integer cores and was capable of high clock speeds, its high price and poor performance at the individual core level meant that it wasn't very competitive with the equivalent Intel CPUs. Now we have the AMD FX-8350 CPU, code-named Vishera and based on the Piledriver architecture to test. Has AMD managed to reduce the performance deficit relative to Intel? Let's find out.

For today's tests we have prepared two groups of processors. The first includes Phenom II old-timers AMD has repeatedly cut prices on. The second is composed of the newer, budget Intel Ivy Bridge processors. Let's see what is preferable these days.
