A little under two years after the release of Intel’s high-end desktop – Sandy Bridge-E – LGA 2011 processors and the corresponding X79 chipset, it’s time for the platform to go through its refresh phase. Featuring a die shrink from SB-E’s 32nm to 22nm, Ivy Bridge-E is intended to take command of Intel’s flagship line of high-end, consumer processors. Codenamed Clarkdale, the new LGA 1156 i3 / i5 chips are built on the Westmere 32nm process, joining the previous 45nm Bloomfield and Lynnfield releases in the Nehalem family. Another new idea Intel implemented in these chips is adding a GPU core directly on the processor alongside the CPU. Three new chipsets were also introduced that allow you to run one of these GPU-equipped processors without a discrete video card. With the release of the Deneb based quad core processors known as the Phenom II series, AMD started to grab a nice share of the mid-range and higher market share by offering quad-core processors for quite a bit less than the competition. Back in June of 2009, Benchmark Reviews was there when AMD started a new trend with Deneb based processors that didn't quite meet the rigorous standards of testing on all four cores. Processors like Core i3-2100 are in their right places in terms of both price and performance. In due time, we liked the Core i3-500 lineup very much. Now we like the Core i3-2000 one even more.
