LGA 2011 combines the advantages of LGA 1155 (new architecture, unlocked multiplier at less than $1000) and LGA 1366 (up to six cores, bus overclocking, a lot of PCIe lanes). On the whole, the new platform is a success. If you're willing to buy a processor for the price of an entire PC, that is. But we still like this kind of evolution very much.

To those looking to build the biggest, baddest high-end PC around, the wait for Sandy Bridge-E was no doubt painful. But, it's finally here, and much to our expectations, Intel has once again solidified its position as the performance leader. So let's take a look at what it offers, and compare it to the i7-990X, i7-2600K and AMD FX-8150.

The new Sandy Bridge-E platform from Intel really is a different kind of beast. When you throw it through those CPU intensive benchmarks, the performance of the new i7 3960X is amazing with performance at stock being better at times than when our 2600k is running at 5.2GHz. The issue with the 3960X isn't the performance, though; it's the price. At $1,049 US, there's nothing cheap about the new 3960X and when you start to throw in a new X79 performance motherboard and a Quad Channel RAM kit, the price of a new Sandy Bridge-E system becomes really expensive.

It's been ages since we've tested 4-Way CrossFireX actually. Recently we did a bit of 3-Way CrossFireX action with the introduction of the Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge-E platform, but apart from that there hasn't been any real reason lately to expand from those numbers; that along with the fact that most boards support only up to three cards.

We don't get to use our Surround Vision / Eyefinity setup that much with the last time we used it being when we tested the MARS 2 from ASUS. Really, though, since then there's not been much reason to use it. With video card setups being pretty quiet lately and nothing changing in that department this year, the monitor setup has just been gathering hardware around it. Until today, though, where I found myself cleaning for an hour before I could actually move my testbed next to it.

On the 14th of November Intel has shown it's brand new high end platform baptized Sandy Bridge E to the world. Almost all of the press sample kits included only the Extreme version aka the 3960X CPU. Some lucky hardware sites got a 3930K version, with unlocked multiplier, from a 3rd party to test or review. Since this K skew CPU is retailing at only half the price it could become quite a steal. This if it performs alike it's bigger brother. Major difference between the Extreme and the K version is the reduced L3 cache from 15Mb down to 12Mb. Yet, as mentioned before, the multiplier remains fully unlocked, similar to the K skews of the little 2500K and 2600K socket 1155 models, the latter two being heavily popular, as speeds over 4.5Ghz are a breeze. Before continuing with the review : a big thanks to the guys from Tones webshop to supply us with a brand new retail 3930K CPU. Now let's get it on !
