We proceed with our series of articles devoted to analyzing performance of modern CPUs in real applications and finding out the effect of processor features on performance. Today we shall analyze the effect of memory subsystem on performance on the example of Intel Core i7.
We have been waiting for months, but Bulldozer is finally here. The weeks leading up to the launch of the new FX line of processors hasn't been the best for AMD with a large amount of leaks that haven't put the new FX-8150 in the best light. What should you do, if you aren't willing to spend more than 150-250 dollars on a processor? Obviously, you'll have to compromise, e.g. choose Core i5 instead of Core i7 (if you need an Intel CPU, that is). But there are a lot of Core i5 processors in the market. How do they perform? The one area that the 22nm Ivy Bridge processors really shine in is the graphics department. Usually we don't have too many positive things to say about Intel HD Graphics, but the new Intel HD 4000 series graphics engine shows major improvement. Intel said that mainstream gamers should be able to use Intel HD Graphics 4000 as they have up to twice the 3-D graphics performance compared to the previous-generation processor. Today AMD launches the new Trinity APU lines based on the Piledriver architecture. We have in their latest A10-588K and A8-566K APU's for testing. GPU as well as CPu enhancements await end users with this new product line. The big question on everyones mind is "Does Trinity close the gap and finally provide a compelling argument to the Ivy Bridge CPU. There's no doubt that Intel retains the performance crown but the really compelling argument is in where AMD is headed.
