This LGA 1366 socket processor can be run in any existing Intel X58 Express chipset powered motherboard after a quick BIOS flash, so a new platform will not be needed. AMD created a small number of limited edition “TWKR” processors expressly for the extreme overclocking community in appreciation for their record performance feats with Dragon platform technology and AMD Phenom II processors. These processors are designed to reach the utmost performance barriers of the AMD Phenom II processor and operate beyond the specifications of typical production level processors. As speculated, it’s a high current chip that can take the extreme stresses of Liquid Nitrogen overclocking. Our testing of the TWKR showed that we could reach ~6.6GHz on Liquid Nitrogen. It would be a shame if only the top overclockers and media would be able to use these, so we have teamed up with AMD to give away one of these overclocking monsters. With high end air or water cooling you should be able to take a TWKR processor up to 4.0-4.1GHz with ease and for those that want to try out dry ice, liquid nitrogen, or liquid helium you are looking at 5GHz - 7GHz depending on your pot and cooling method. These processors are monsters and have been selected and binned as being the best of the best.

Während es bei Intel munter tickt und tockt, konnte man bei AMD in den vergangenen Monaten den Eindruck gewinnen, dass dort überwiegend auf der Stelle getreten wird. Mühsam ließ der Phenom Prozessor den TLB-Bug hinter sich und krabbelte langsam von 2,3 auf 2,6 GHz, während die TDP zugleich von 125 auf 140 Watt kletterte. Es ist höchste Zeit, dass AMD ein neues Produkt vorstellt, welches zumindest den Schritt zurück in die mittlere Leistungsklasse erlaubt. Dieses Produkt heißt Phenom II und steht seit heute im Laden.

AMD first launched the 955 Black Edition and 945 CPUs back in April both based on the 45nm Phenom II technology. With Intel seemingly forging ahead in terms of performance with its i7 series, AMD’s new products aim to compete more with Intel’s quad-core range and should offer a cheaper upgrade for users with an AM2+ platform as the AM3 CPUs are backwards compatible with AM2+ sockets.
The 955 BE, of which we are taking a look at today, is a Black Edition product, which in effect means that the CPU features a unlocked multiplier; a huge plus for the overclockers. A dual DDR2 and DRR3 memory controller is also crammed into the chip.
The 900 series of AMD processors are all quad-core CPUs with a 6MB L3 cache, 2MB larger than the 800 series and the stock speed of the 955 BE was the fastest until it was superseded very recently by the 965 BE which clocks in at a whopping 3.4GHz. However, today we focus on the 955, let's check it out

On the 14th of November Intel has shown it's brand new high end platform baptized Sandy Bridge E to the world. Almost all of the press sample kits included only the Extreme version aka the 3960X CPU. Some lucky hardware sites got a 3930K version, with unlocked multiplier, from a 3rd party to test or review. Since this K skew CPU is retailing at only half the price it could become quite a steal. This if it performs alike it's bigger brother. Major difference between the Extreme and the K version is the reduced L3 cache from 15Mb down to 12Mb. Yet, as mentioned before, the multiplier remains fully unlocked, similar to the K skews of the little 2500K and 2600K socket 1155 models, the latter two being heavily popular, as speeds over 4.5Ghz are a breeze.
