Delivery and Specifications

Delivery

Cable Length
1 x ATX 24 pin 62.5 cm
2 x EPS/ATX 12V 4+4 pin 64 cm
6 x PCI-E 6+2 pin 58 cm
3 x 4 SATA 85 cm (40 cm - 55 cm - 70 cm - 85cm)
1 x 4 pin Molex 85 cm (40 cm - 55 cm - 70 cm - 85cm)
1 x Floppy-Adaptor 10 cm

The delivery found with the OCZ Silencer MK III 750 Watt is good. Even a high-end gaming system or an overclocking setup can be wired seamlessly. It's possible to drive an NVIDIA SLI or AMD CrossFire setup with this PSU and up to twelve SATA devices can be connected to this unit. There is also the possibility to connect two EPS plugs to motherboards, which should offer this feature. Another special feature is the silent mode. Once you flip the switch above the main power connector it is activated. Now the 140 millimeter fan will remain dead silent up to a load of 50 percent or in other words 375 Watts.

The MK III 750 Watt has been 80Plus Gold certified, which means that this PSU is able to reach a maximum efficiency above 90 percent. Furthermore this PSU complies with ErP guidelines (Energy Rated Product) and therefore it consumes less than 1 Watt when an attached system is powered off or in standby. Following we show you the feature list, which is quite long with this product.
  • 750W Power Output with Single Strong 12V Rail
  • The PC Power and Cooling PPCMK3S750 power supply delivers continuous 750W @ 50°C of safe, reliable output for your computer systems. One single strong +12V rail with 2 x 4+4-pin CPU power connectors and 4x 6+2-Pin PCIe connectors can juice up your high-end CPU and even multiple graphics cards.
  • 80PLUS Gold Certified
  • The 80PLUS Gold certified power supply provides power efficiency of at least 87% (up to 90% under real world operating environments for this model) at any load between 20% and 100%, saving your money on your electrical bill, reducing heat in your computer's system and prolonging its life.
  • The modular cable design allows use of only the cables you need for reduced system clutter and improved air flow.
  • Comprehensive Protection
  • Industrial grade protection circuitry (over-voltage, over-power, and short circuit) provides maximum safety to your critical system components.
  • The PC Power and Cooling PPCMK3S750 is AMD CrossFireX and NVIDIA SLI Ready and comes with four 6+2 Pin PCI-E connectors enabling you to build a high performance multi-GPU gaming system.
  • Dual Thermal Control System: Normal Mode and Silent Mode operation
  • Built with 100% Japanese low ESR 105°C capacitors for high reliability
  • Compliant with the latest ATX12V v2.31 and SSI PSDG standard for worry-free compatibility
  • 140mm double ball-bearing fan varies RPM by load and temperature for whisper quiet operation
  • Fan Mode Switch: Fan does not come on until 50 % load
  • Active Power Factor Correction (PFC) to effectively regulate input voltage

    Test setup

Regarding the power supply tests we refer to 80Plus.org. The guys over there do the certification of the power supplies. Behind 80Plus.org there is a company called Ecova Plug Load Solutions, which own professional testing equiment for internal power supplies, such as a Chroma 6000 ATE. With the system power supplies can be tested under standard conditions, which means that at the end of the day one gets comparable data.

Generally speaking the there are three different tests. First of all Plug Load Solutions goes for 20 percent load on the power supply. At this point they measure input and output power and calculate the efficiency as a result. Furthermore they monitor the different voltages - +12V, -12V, 3.3V, 5V and 5Vsb. With these values taken one can see whether the power supply complies with a five or a ten percent deviation standard. After that they do also keep an eye on power factor correction, concerning which 1 is the ideal value.

In case somebody is looking for further information on how 80Plus.org conducts it tests, then we can recommend the following PDF.

    Conclusion

With the Silencer MK III 750 Watt, OCZ presents a very good and solid power supply. 91.30 Percent efficiency at 50 Percent load is a very good value and as a result thermal dissipation power is low. This implicates a noise level which is low too because there isn't much heat to be removed by a fan. Once put in silent mode the fan is being turned off as long as the load stays below 50 percent, which is remarkable. Always practical is a cable management and furthermore we like the number of integrated cables. There really is enough in the delivery to make any enthusiast happy.

A cable management is always a good thing because of the simple reason that it allows users to only connect cables they really need. Therefore a system can be wired as neatly as possible. Unfrotunately OCZ chose to equip this PSU with male connectors on the PSUs side. This means that if you were to forget to put the plastic caps back on the connectors you can easily shorten the PSU.
With four molex connectors and twelve SATA connectors it shouldn't be a problem to wire a high-end system. Also the fact that you can natively connect a two-way-SLI/Crossfire setup shows the Silencer MK III's preferred field of application. There is even plenty of power left to overclock a setup which uses three cards.

If we look at the performance values, the OCZ Silencer MK III 750 Watt shows very good stability under load conditions. If we look at average deviations, we see that the results at 3.3 Volt and 5 Volt with 20 and 50 percent load deaviate a bit more than other PSUs in our list. Never the less there is nothing to worry about since the values are still perfectly within the ATX specs. Convincing that's what the efficiency is.

For the OCZ Silencer MK III 750 Watt receives very good four and a half out of five stars.
