Review: SilverStone Heligon HE01
Category : Aircooling
Published by Marc Büchel on 01.12.12
With their Heligon HE01 cooler, SilverStone has a twin tower cooler in its portfolio which is a bit different from all the other tower coolers that are available these days. In fact what makes it different from it's rivals is the asymmetric shape as well as the use of a 140 x 38 millimeter fan instead of a 140 x 25 millimeter fan.

Included in delivery

The Heligon HE01 comes well protected from outer influences, that none of the parts included will be damaged during transportation. SilverStone includes not only an Intel but also an AMD mounting kit. Therefore the cooler is compatible to both worlds right out of the box. SilverStone ships this cooler with quite a unique fan. In this case you get a 140 x 140 x 38 millimeter fan, that features a dip switch to choose between two different modes. Therefore there is the option to drive the fan between 500 and 2000 rpm as well as the possibility to drive it between 500 and 1'200 rpm.

Construction and design

Construction

If we had to define the type of cooler the Heligon HE01 is, then we would describe it as a twin tower cooler. This type of cooler comes with the advantage that manufacturers can realize a huge area for heat dissipation. The disadvantage over down-draft coolers is that no air is directed towards the motherboard, therefore non of the onboard components receive direct cooling. SilverStone manufactures their Heligon HE01 cooler from aluminium and copper. You can find a copper base plate which leads the dissipation power to six heatpipes which all have a diameter of six millimeters. Altogether there are 47 fins soldered to the heatpipes for perfect heat transfer.

Design

We did not see any manufacturing mistakes on our sample, and it seems that it has been very well made which means that manufacturing quality is on an excellent level. The heatpipes do have different bending radius, which results in less additional vortex. Furhtermore this cooler comes with a total of 47 fins. SilverStone chose a similar fin design for both sides of the cooler.

Mounting

SilverStone ships their Heligon HE01 with a mounting kit, which is compatible to the Intel as well as AMD sockets. Basically mounting the cooler is simple, but still we'd recommend to consult the manual since there are quite a few pieces which need to be put together before the cooler can actually be mounted.

On these pictures you can clearly see that the Heligon HE01 has been reasonably sized. Therfore it's possible to install memory modules which feature oversized heatsinks. Furthermore you can also see the asymmetric shape of the cooler, which is the reason why you can install all memory modules which are available out there.

The CPU is being evaluated using Real Temp and with Prime95 we reach nearly 100% load on the CPU. For measuring the noise level we use a Voltcraft SL-200 decibel meter, which is positioned one meter from the CPU cooler with the fan mounted.

    Conclusion

    General   + -
With the Heligon HE01, SilverStone shows an overall good cooler. In terms of cooling capacity the Heligon HE01 has been able to reach the center span of our comparison tables. In this regard we have to say that the competition is very hard concerning our test field. There are almost no entry level coolers in our comparison table and therefore the Heligon HE01 has to compete with the absolute best in class. It's not only the performance that is on a good level with this cooler, we also like the build quality. Looking at the design of the cooler it looks quite unusual because of the asymmetrically shaped towers.   - Performance
    - Manufacturing quality

    Installation   + -
The installation process is easy and you can mount the cooler quickly. Nevertheless we didn't want to install it without consulting the manual. There is only one thing we don't really like about the installation process. We would love to see the fan fitted to the cooler with more pressure. At the moment it can start to vibrate.   - Easy and robust - Clamps to put the fan in place

    Performance   + -

During our tests we used the fan which was in the delivery. It features a diameter of 140 millimeter. If you drive the fan at low rotation speeds, it is silent and at 12 Volt it is loud with it's 1900 rpm. In the end performance is on a reasonable level and even overclocking is possible.

      - Good cooling capacity

    Recommendation   + -
If you're looking for a well performing CPU cooler, which is reasonably sized and leaves space for every single oversized memory module available out there, then the Heligon HE01 from SilverStone is a good choice.   - Enthusiast
    - Gamer
    - Overclocker
