Review: Alpenföhn Gotthard
Category : Aircooling
Published by Marc Büchel on 12.10.12
With the Gotthard, Alpenföhn has a topflow cooler in its portfolio which is capable of removing a lot of heat at adequate temperatures. With this cooler you get six heatpipes, which feed three separate cooling blocks with heat. It will be interesting to check how efficient this cooler really is.

The Gotthard comes well protected from outer influeces, that none of the parts included will be damaged during transportation. Alpenföhn includes not only an Intel but also an AMD mounting kit. Therefore the cooler is compatible to both worlds right out of the box. Alpenföhn also ships this cooler with one of their own fans in the delivery. The fan belongs to Alpenföhn's Wing Boost Plus PWM series and measures 140 millimeter in diameter.

Construction and design

Construction

With the Gotthard you get a topflow cooler. This typ of cooler is capable of also cooling the power design of your motherboard as well as the memory. Compared to a tower cooler there is also a downside: usually tower coolers offer a bigger surface area which in this end means better performance. Alpenföhn manufacturs their Gotthard from aluminium and copper. You can find a copper base plate which leads the dissipation power to four heatpipes which all have a diameter of six millimeters. Compared to the cooper baseplate the heatpipes have not been nickel plated. Altogether there are 64 fins soldered to the heatpipes for perfect heat transfer.

Design

We did not see any manufacturing mistakes on our sample, and it seems that it has been very well made which means that manufacturing quality is on an good level. The heatpipes do have different bending radius, which results additional less vortex. Furhtermore this cooler comes with a total of 64 fins. Overall the cooler consists of three different parts. The two blocks in the outside are symmetric to one another. The block in the center is a bit smaller than the two others but still the two heatpipes which are located right above the CPU die are connected to this block.

Mounting

Alpenföhn ships their Gotthard with mounting kits that are compatible to the most common Intel and AMD sockets. Basically mounting the cooler is simple but still we'd recommend to consult the manual since there are quite a few pieces which need to be put together before the cooler can actually be mounted.

Alpenföhn's Gotthard is a reasonably sized cooler which easily fits on todays ATX or mATX motherboards. Being not too big the cooler doesn't collide with memory modules.

The CPU is being evaluated using Real Temp and with Prime95 we reach nearly 100% load on the CPU. For measuring the noise level we use a Voltcraft SL-200 decibel meter, which is positioned one meter from the CPU cooler with the fan mounted.

    Conclusion

    General   + -
With the Gotthard, Alpenföhn shows quite a good cooler. In terms of cooling capacity the Gotthard is able to the center span of our comparison charts. In this regard we have to say that the competition is very hard because we've tested only high-end coolers so far. But it's not only the performance that matters, the build quality for example is good and we also like this coolers looks and its nickel plated baseplate.   - Build quality - Polished base plate

    Installation   + -
The installation process is easy and you can mount the cooler quickly. Nevertheless we didn't want to install it without consulting the manual. Another thing which is important to us is the fact that this cooler is compatible with all recent sockets from Intel and AMD.   - Easy and robust - Compatible with Intel and AMD sockets

    Performance   + -
During our tests we used the fan, which is included in delivery. What you get is a 140 millimeter fan which is PWM driven. If you drive the fan at 7 Volt you almost can't hear it anymore and at 12 Volt it can still be described as silent. In the end performance at higher rotation speed was better then at lower rotation speed, when compared to the competition. We recommend to drive the fan which is included in the delivery at 140 millimeter. This way you get the best performance possible.   - Good cooling capacity

    Recommendation   + -
If you're looking for a well built CPU cooler, which looks nice and isn't too big, then you're not doing anything wrong when you go for the Gotthard from Alpenföhn.   - Enthusiast
    - Gamer
