Review: ASUS GeForce GTX 660 DirectCU II Top

Already at launch ASUS offers with their GTX 660 DirectCU II Top a factory overclocked version of NVIDIAs brand new GTX 660. The fact that this card has been equipped with ASUS' very well performing and yet silent DirectCU II v2 cooler along with a custom PCB and a huge factory overclocking seems to make this a very interesting offer.

Technical data / specifications
With the ASUS GeForce GTX 660 DirectCu II Top you get a factory overclocked card
with a custom PCB design as well as a DirectCU II v2 cooler. The manufacturer
claims that this baby is 8 % faster than the reference design, 78 % cooler and
3 times quieter. Thanks to the factory overclocking, binned GPU,
custom cooler and reworked PCB design we can kind of believe that (not the 78
% cooler part though).
Looking at clock speeds we see that the GPU runs at 1'072 MHz standard with a
typical boost clock of 1'137 MHz. While the stock designed GTX 660 runs at
980 MHz with a boost of 1'033 MHz. Plus our sample was clocking itself up to
1'163
MHz which is 2x 13 MHz more than the specs. This time factory overclocking has
been made also regarding
the GDDR5 with a clock speed of 1'527 MHz (6'108 MHz effective) against nVidia's
recommendation of 1'500 MHz (6'000 MHz effective).
Now looking at the phycsical specifications of the DirectCU II Top version as
said before ASUS reworked the PCB, binned the core and used their own GPU cooler.
The DCU II Top gets 6 digital power phases and 3 POSCAP while the reference GTX
660 has only 4 analog phases and 1 POSCAP. You also find a lot of ASUS
technology that helps to improve overclocking, power efficiency, noise reduction
(less EMI), lifespan and so on. The DCU II Top version is powered by the DirectCU II cooler v2 (the v1
was crap if you ask me) which I literally love that features two 80mm fans with
11 blades each, three 6mm heatpipes and a red/black design. I was too lazy to
count the fins and calculate the dissipation surface/power but trust me, it's
big. So in other words to stay simple this graphics card is: Better, faster
and stronger.

Preview
Delivery
The delivery is reduced to the strict minimum therefore you will find
only a manual, one power adapter, a DVI to VGA adapter and of course the
graphics card itself that's all. One comment about the box though, what the hell
is that? I hope it is not the final package. Though the graphics card is well
attached this thing is ugly and not handy at all, where is my lovely ASUS
graphics card box like it used to be?

We don't know about the
graphics cards from the other manufacturers as we don't have all of them on
hand but we have to say that this one from ASUS is a strong one, almost
perfect. We mean that thanks to the factory overclocking of no less than
+104 MHz it gives the DirectCU II Top a nice boost in performance. Plus
the card features an ASUSmade PCB design with a lot of cool features
like more phases, a digital power design and so on. Everything cooled by
the cooler I like the most named DirectCU II v2 that one we introduced
in the specifications page. It is noiseless in 2D mode and impressively
silent in 3D load just like it was on the GTX 670 DirectCU II Top,
almost noiseless. |

Thanks to his high
factory overclocking, the GTX 660 DirectCU II Top was on average 7 %
faster than the reference GTX 660 in the games we tested. Just enough
to reach the performance of the reference GTX 660 Ti thanks to factory
overclocking on both GPU and memory. This also means that the DirectCU
II Top version is as fast as the GTX 580 (faster by 1.6 % to be precise)
under the games we
tested here in average. And this performance has been achieved with a
power consumption max of only 190 Watts for the whole setup measured
under heavy 3D Load (FureMark) which is very energy efficeint according
to the performance offered. Unfortunately things are less green under
idle with a power consumption of 67 Watts while our setup with the EVGA
sample was only drawing 60 Watts. |
