Review: ASUS P8Z77-V Premium
Category : Z77
Published by Marc Büchel on 20.07.12
With the P8Z77-V Premium ASUS has a new flagship motherboard in their portfolio when it comes to their performance products. Malicious tongues would say that the ASUS engineers just took a P8Z77-V Deluxe and added a Thunderbolt interface to it. For us this is reason enough to check if this really was what they've done.

The P8Z77-V Premium is ASUS' high end performance motherboard regarding Intels latest Z77 chipset. Therefore we're really curious what they've come up with from the layout and design as well as feature perspective.

    Features

Digi+ Power Control Since quite some time ASUS has been equipping its boards with digital power designs. Using the right software it is not only possible to adjust voltages while being in Windows one can now also control impedances.

Thunderbolt ASUS ships the P8Z77-V Premium with native Thunderbolt support. Utilizing the x4 lanes of PCI Express together with the iGPU integrated DisplayPort output, the P8Z77-V Premium is capable of delivering a simultaneous bi-directional throughput of 10 Gbps data via this Thunderbolt port. This port is also capable of displaying video content with up to 2560 x 1600 resolution. Fruthermore it is also possible to realize a triple display solution using only the iGPU.

BT3.0/4.0 Dual Band Wi-Fi 802.11n ASUS ships the P8Z77-V Premium with Bluetooth 3.0/4.0 and IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi support. Furthermore you get two antennas to increase wireless range.

EPU If you activate the EPU this chip monitors all possible voltages and clock speeds and automatically sets them to guarantee an energy efficient operation of you system.

TPU As soon as one activates the TPU this chips monitors all possible voltages and clock speeds using the according software. The difference to the EPU is that TPU will provide as much performance as possible. Therefore it can increase clock speeds and voltages.

    Layout

Already at a first glance the ASUS P8Z77-V Premium looks very good with it harmonic design. The colors look suite nicely and the different blue tones on a black PCB are calming. The layout itself is well thought and there is for example plenty of space around the CPU socket to install even todays largest CPU coolers.

ASUS equipped the P8Z77-V Premium with a 16+4+2 phase VRM design whereas the CPU can rely on 16 phases, the integrated graphics unit gets four phases and the memory gets its own two phases. Furthermore ASUS put a digital power design on the board, which comes meanwhile in the third generation. With their digital power design they promise that it emits less electromagnetic radiation than its analogue counterpart. Therefore ASUS claims that the system stability can be enhanced even further, especially during extreme overclocking.

Totally you'll find four DIMM-slots on the P8Z77-V Premium. Officially supported are DDR3 - 2800 (OC) / 2600 (OC) / 2400 (OC) / 2200 OC / 2133 (OC) / 1866 (OC) / 1600 / 1333 / 1066 with up to 32 GByte capacity. There is plenty of space between the CPU socket and the DIMM slots, that you can install even big aircooler as well as memory with big heatspreaders.

The power design as well as the PLX chips below the CPU socket is being held at adequate temperatures via passive cooling blocks. In order to improve heat conductivity these three cooling blocks share one heatpipe. The PCH is also being covered by a passive cooling block. The aluminium blocks around the CPU socket are quite big but still there is plenty of space to easily install even todays biggest air coolers.

    Connectors and I/O

Totally ASUS provided the P8Z77-V Premium with eight angled and one straight SATA ports which should be enough for any office PC, gaming system or enthusiast build. You'll also find practical onboard power- and reset-buttons. ASUS even thought of a debug display which is very useful if you should once experience issues with one of the components in your system. Another, rather unusual, feature can be found in the bottom right corner of the PCB. ASUS chose to put a 32 Gigabyte mSATA-SSD into the mini PCIe slot. If you should own a standard hard drive but no SSD you can activate Intel Smart Cache and accelerate your system like this.

Totally you'll find six fan headers on the P8Z77-V Premium which is more than enough, to provide a well equipped midrange or high-end-system with fresh air. The fanheaders are located around the CPU socket as well as at the bottom edge of the mainboard.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel ASUS equipped the P8Z77-V Premium with two USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, two eSATA ports, two gigabit ethernet ports, an optical out as well as an analogue audio panel. Furthermore there is also an HDMI and a DisplayPort connector. Like the name of the board suggests there is also the new Thunderbolt port. Last but not least ASUS decided to place a BIOS reset button at the back panel.

    BIOS

ASUS has been the first motherboard manufacturer to introduce the UEFI standard for their entire line-up. Also since then they've had one of the most sophisticated user interfaces. Not only is it well structured also the design is very nice. Furhtermore you can for example save BIOS profiles and is very easy to update your BIOS from a USB stick. To do so you just have to launch the corresponding tool.

    3D Mark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze a lot out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Meanwhile Super Pi even in its latest version has become pretty old. Never the less it is able to show scaling to the clock speed nicely.

    Crysis 800 x 600, low details

Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX9 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

    Resident Evil 800 x 600, low details

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX9 benchmark we can again show CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

    Street Fighter 4 800 x 600, low details

Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

    Conclusion

    Allgemein   + -
At a first glance ASUS leaves a good impression with its P8Z77-V Premium. Once more we very much like the design of this P8-Series motherboard. The color scheme has a high value of recognition. We also like the cooling blocks covering PCH, PLX chip and VRM. They are not too big leaving plenty of space to easily install a big CPU cooler.   - Design -

    Layout   + -

Generally the ASUS P8Z77-V Premium's layout is well thought. Once more very practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. Also the debug display is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Furthermore the placement of the PCI-Express x16 slots is also well thought an therefore nothing needs to be criticized at this point. Looking at the DIMM slots we see that they are not too close to the CPU socket, which means that you wont have issues installing a big CPU cooler. What we don't understand is why ASUS chose to put a small 32 Gigabyte caching SSD on a high-end motherboard. Users who pay this kind of money are very likely to already own a high-performance SSD. And if they don't they are very likely to buy one when the buy this board.

    Performance   + -
Update: In a retest of the motherboard, which had been conducted on the 28th of January 2013 with the latest BIOS, we've seen that ASUS has been taking care of the initial performance issues this board was suffering from. In our overall performance rating this board now claims 2nd place when it comes to 3D performance and 1st when we look at 2D performance. It is astonishing that ASUS succeeded in pushing the overall performance by about three percent, only by applying BIOS updates.

To take a look at the updated performance results we refer to our updated motherboard charts.

The P8Z77-V Premium seems to have some performance related issues. There is only the CPU performance value in 3DMark Vantage which is really on a highly competitive level. The poor performance also explains the overall rankings of this board. In this regard the board can be found once on the forth to last spot and on the second to last position. Taking power consumption in the equation doesn't help either. In fact this board really seems to burn the power. It even sets a new record and therefore ranks last for idle as well as load power consumption.

      - 3DMark Vantage CPU - Performance in general
    - Power Consumption

    BIOS / Overclocking   + -
In the overclocking part the P8Z77-V Premium was a very convincing product. Therefore it's been childrens play to reach the clock wall of our test CPU. Furthermore the UEFI BIOS is very easy to use and one can quickly find the settings needed. These days ASUS makes some of the nicest BIOS not only when it comes to the structure but also when you look at the design.   - Well structured BIOS - UEFI-BIOS

    Recommendation   + -
If you want to build a high end comptuer or gaming system, which is based on a new Ivy Bridge CPU then the ASUS P8Z77-V Premium is a very good choice.   - High-End

    Rating
We give the ASUS P8Z77-V Premium solid four out of five stars.

    Personal Opinion

If you have the P8Z77-V Premium in front of you lying on the desk you'll have that kind of feeling when you're expecting something really, really brilliant. And finally after the unboxing there is a board that has more features then a skycraper has floors. But a closer look reveals a 32 Gigabyte mSATA SSD. Seriously? 32 Gigabyte mSATA SSD on a 400 Euro motherboard? If I went into a shop and bought myself a 400 Euro motherboard then I will definitely build a system which has a proper SSD in it. And this proper SSD is not only bigger, it's also a lot faster. If I were to give ASUS an advice, then I would say, just remove this 32 Gigabyte mSATA SSD and sell the board cheaper.

Something which is really, really a pity and quite disappointing is the performance level at the moment. ASUS really knows how to optimize the out-of-the-box-performance and therefore I would have expected more than what we got here. Hopefully future BIOS versions will solve some of the performance issues and hopefully it is not related to the thunderbolt implementation. But still it's really difficult to define my feelings when it comes to this board. I don't know what it is but there is something that makes me want this thing.

After reading what I've just written I think this board doesn't know what it is. I think it's something between a flagship and everybodies darling. And I don't think that's a good idea. If it was either a flagship or everybodies darling it would be ok and I could live with it, but not when it's both. It really is a pity because there is everything on this PCB that is needed to create a mindblowing product!
