It's been quite a while since Cooler Master last introduced a high end CPU cooler. The company is especially proud of this product because they are the first to release a cooler with "flat" heatpipes. Cooler Master themselves call them "Vertical Vapor Chambers". Using these new Heatpipes they want to show Noctua and co who is the boss in the house.

The Cooler Master TPC 800 comes well protected from outer influeces, that none of the parts included will be damaged during transportation. The good delivery includes a lot of accessories and therefore it's almost obvious that the mounting kits are compatible with all different sockets that are in the market today. This cooler is even ready for Intels new Socket 2011. Furthermore you'll also find two mounting kits for up to two optional fans to provide "push and pull" cooling the TPC 800 cooler. There is no fan included in the bundle.

Construction and design

Construction

The Cooler Master TPC 800 mainly consists of aluminium and copper. The heatpipes go through the copper base plate. To transport the heat as efficiently as possible from the CPU there are six heatpipes which all have a diameter of six millimeters. Furthermore Cooler Master makes use of their new "Vertical Vaper Chambers" which are basically very flat heatpipes that offer an improved surface area. Altogether there are 45 aluminium fins soldered to the heatpipes.




Design

We did not see any manufacturing mistakes on our sample, and it seems that it has been well made which means that manufacturing is on a high level. The heatpipes do have different bending radius, which gives them an offset regarding the area where the heat is being transferred to the fins. Furhtermore this cooler comes with a total of 45 fins. You can see a slightly wedged profile. Furhtermore there are little holes in all fins which allow a more efficient airflow with less turbulence.

Mounting

The mounting kit is compatible with all socket available these days. Included in delivery you find a backplate that is suitable for all sockets. Once in position on the backside of the motherboard you can put it in place using four thumb screws. After that you can place the CPU cooler onto the CPU and then install the X-shaped metal piece and tighten it to the spacers. Installing the fans is also quite easy. One can do this using the delivered metal brackets. Altogether the installation is simple but it takes some time.

As we can see on the pictures, taken on a ASUS board with the Cooler Master TPC 800 mounted, the first DIMM slot is still usable and you can even fit on it Kingston HyperX modules, which are well known for their huge heatspreaders. There even is plenty of space to install a second fan on the backside of the cooler.

Testroutine

The CPU is being evaluated using Real Temp and with Prime95 we reach nearly 100% load on the CPU. For measuring the noise level we use a Voltcraft SL-200 decibel meter, which is positioned one meter from the CPU cooler with the fan mounted.

Conclusion

General   + -
With the TPC 800, Cooler Master shows a cooler that offers very good performance and also the build quility is on a very high level. Unfortunately there are a few things we would like to see improved. First of all there is the mounting kit. We're sure that a mounting kit that is able to keep the cooler on the CPU with higher pressure will increase the performance of the TPC 800. Furthermore there there are the plastic brackets which keep the fans in place. They can be moved quite easily and when the cooler is standing upright, then the fans can slide down.   - Performance - Mounting Kit
       
Installation   + -
The installation process is quite easy but it takes some time until the cooler is in place. As we already mentioned we would have loved to see a mounting kit that is cabaple of offering more pressure. Like this Cooler Master is wasting some performance.   - Easy - Compatible with Intel and AMD sockets - Springs - Pressure
       
Performance   + -

We tested this cooler using two fans from Noctua. First we provided 12 Volt to them and then we switched to 7 Volt. At 12 Volts the cooler was subjectively audible and a 7 Volt it was subjectively silent at 800 RPM. Although lowering the supply voltage to the fans increases temperatures there is still headroom for overclocking. In fact this is a very efficient cooler.

     
       
Recommendation   + -

Cooler Master succeeded in creating a good cooler with an attractive price tag. The new "Vertical Vapor Chambers" really do a good job and they've proven to be very efficient.
