It's been quite while since AMD released it's bulldozer processors. When they were launched we reviewed the FX-8150 and the FX-8120 octacore CPUs. These two processors haven't been able to convince because of their poor performance per MHz. Now we're going to check wether the FX-4170 with 4.2 GHz is a fierce competitor for Intel or not.
How AMDs quadcore Bulldozer FX CPUs performs in our benchmarking parcours, that's what we're going to show you on the following pages.
Furhtermore we'll also take a closer look at the architecture of AMDs quadcore CPU.

The Bulldozer CPU
Let's begin with AMD's line-up, here we will talk about
the Bulldozer CPUs that are meanwhile available. With Bulldozer
AMD has seven models in its portfolio. Two of them are eight-core CPUs, one is a six-core
processor and finally
another one is a quad-core model. These AM3+ processors are compatible with AM3 motherboards.
However you will have to check the website of your motherboard manufacturer to
update to latest BIOS version and check if there is a version that supports the
new FX processors.
Looking at
the specifications, they have a TDP of 95 Watts and 125 Watts for the most
powerful of them. They also have a L2 cache that is proportional to the amount
of cores and 8 MB of L3 cache. All those FX processors are ''Black Editions'',
which means that the CPU multiplyer is unlocked. Furthermore all CPUs have a
Turbo feature. The first step, which is called Turbo Core does affect all the
CPUs cores while the
second step only affects half of total amount of cores, which has the
consequence that the dissipation power remains withing the TDP limit.
At the time this article has been written the cheapest AMD
FX CPU costs CHF 116.- (est. EUR 97.-). The price goes all the way up to CHF
217.- (est. EUR
180.-) for the high-end FX-8150. The
FX-4170 we tested here costs CHF 148.- (est. EUR 123.-).
AMD started from scratch to make this new architecture way
different from what we used to see on a Phenom II for exemple. The major change
is the sharing of computing units. By computing units we mean the fetching unit
as well as the decoding unit, the Floating Point Scheduler and finally the L2
cache. The image above shows you a dual core CPU while the image below
shows you how a Bulldozer's module (2 physical cores) is organized.
Theorically
this lowers the CPUs manufacturing cost by lowering the amount of transistors this
should also
result in lower power consumption and still maintaining maximum performance. In
practice it's another world. The FX Bulldozer's architecture is performing very
well for multithreaded applications and for optimized software as well as server and
supercomputers. Unfortunately you and me we're no professional users, we're
consumers and this is a entirely different target market. We do not tailor the
software to our needs. We have software the is how it is and for us a CPU should
perform best with the software we have. But we'll focus on that in the
performance part of this review. To stay plain and simple, this architecture can be seen like
Intel's Hyperthreading but better. Better because hyperthreading is based on
one physical and one logical core. Bulldozer on the other hand offers two
physical cores which offer an 80 percent scaling. Could it be seen as a quadcore
CPU with "HyperThreading" ? No, although it's not a "real" octacore processor as well.
We like to say it's a processor with four modules.

3DMark 06
3DMark 06 is getting older these days. Therefore if you are using
really powerful graphic cards you will hit CPU limitation which means that the
graphic card isn't the bottleneck in the system. This is also the reason why in
recent high-end desktop systems 3DMark 06 scales nicely with the CPU and the
graphic card has much less influence on the scores.

3DMark Vantage
3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of
a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10,
FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and
different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems
struggle.

Cinebench
The test procedure consists of two
main components: The first test sequence is dedicated to the computer's main
processor. A 3D scene file is used to render a photoreaslistic image. The scene
makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient
occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders. During the first run the
benchmark only uses one CPU (or CPU core) to ascertain a reference value. On
computers that have multiple CPUs or CPU cores and on those that simulate
multiple CPUs (via HyperThreading or similar technolgies), Cinebench will run a
second test using all available CPU power.

Crysis DirectX10
Crysis is still one of the games which has very high
system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API,
High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion
Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX10 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If
we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence
compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

Resident Evil 5 DirectX10
Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR,
Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder
auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5
has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11

Street Fighter4
Street Fighter 4 comes
with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play.
At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see
CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more
important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

Power consumption
Hereby we take the
power consumption under load as well as idle. To generate a load situation we
use SiSoft Sandra's Burn-In Module and measure the whole systems power
consumption. The values we take when the System just booted into Windows and the
load drops.

Conclusion
AMD processor have one really big
advantage. The price you have to pay when you want to buy a new platform is
really competitive. For as little as CHF 148.- (est. EUR 123.-) you can get a
CPU that clocks at 4.2 GHz default. Furthermore there are a lot of good
motherboards for AMDs FX processors which lets you realize really decent setups.
But unfortunately there is also a
really big drawback. Even though the Cores are clocked 4.2 GHz this CPU isn't
much faster than an Intel Core i7-920. Bare in mind that the 920 is a four year
old CPU. To be honest there are only games which haven't been optimized for
multicore CPUs that can partially benefit from this CPU. In all the other tests
the results are disappointing. The performance per clock is really bad and there
is no way that the FX-4170 could possibly keep up with Intels Sandy Bridge or
even their latest Ivy Bridge CPUs. Furthermore there is the power consumption.
Because of the seriously high clock frequency dissipation power is higher too
and therefore this CPU isn't energy efficient at all. Under idle conditions it
needs more power than an FX-8150 and under load the power consumption is almost
as high.
If you are currently using an AMD rig such as AM3/AM3+ with a
Phenom II x4 or lower performing CPU, then AMD's FX eigh core processor might be a
neat
upgrade. Should you be using a Phenom II x6 at the moment, there is no need to
uprade your CPU to a Bulldozer FX. In both cases: before you upgrade, be sure to check the
compatibility of AMD's FX CPU with your motherboard and if needed update your motherboard to
the latest BIOS.
