ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe - mini ITX Madness! Review
Category : Z77
Published by Marc Büchel on 16.05.12
With the P8Z77-I Deluxe, ASUS has a first mini-ITX motherboard in their portfolio which can also be used for overclocking. The most impressive thing about this board is the power design. You can find an VRM design that features eight phases, which is really impressive for such a small motherboard. Furthermore this is the Deluxe model, so there will also be plenty of features.

The P8Z77-I Deluxe will be ASUS' first mini ITX motherboard that can be used for overclocking. Therefore we're really curious what they've done from the layout and design perspective.

    Features

EPU If you activate the EPU this chip monitors all possible voltages and clock speeds and automatically sets them to guarantee an energy efficient operation of you system.

TPU As soon as one activates the TPU this chips monitors all possible voltages and clock speeds using the according software. The difference to the EPU is that TPU will provide as much performance as possible. Therefore it can increase clock speeds and voltages.

Digi+ Power Control Meanwhile ASUS also provides its boards with digital power designs. Using the the right software, in this case ASUS DIGI+ VRM Utility it is not only possible to adjust voltages whilst being in Windows on can now also control impedances.

PCI Express 3.0 The P8Z77-I Deluxe already has PCI-Express 3.0 Support onboard. Therefore this board is ready for upcoming GPU generations that need even more bandwidth.

    Layout

Already at a first glance the ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe looks very good with its harmonic design. The colors suite nicely and the different blue tones on a black PCB are calming. The layout itself is well thought and concerning the samll form factor there is for example plenty of space around the CPU socket to install even big CPU coolers. Right above the PCI-Express-x16 slot there are four straigt SATA connectors. Placed like this it's possible to easily install a big and powerful graphics card without running into troubles.

ASUS equipped the P8Z77-I Deluxe with an eight phase current supply regarding CPU and Memory. To make such a complex VRM design possible on a mini ITX motherboard, ASUS had to think about something special. In this case, they put kind of a raiser card on the top edge of the board. Like this there is enough space for eight phases. In this case there is an ASUS regular DIGI+ VRM which you can also find on their mATX and ATX motherboards.

Totally you'll two DIMM-slots on the P8Z77-I Deluxe. The official clock speeds that are still under NDA. Therefore we'll release them whit the launch of Intels upcoming CPUs.

Southbridge as well as the current converters are being held at adequate temperatures via passive cooling blocks. The cooling blocks haven been positioned wisely, which means that they don't collide with memory or CPU cooler. Considering this is a just 17 x 17 centimeter small mini ITX board, there really is a lot of space for big coolers. Of course you can't compare this to a full ATX board but for mini ITX standards, this is really good.

    Connectors and I/O

Totally ASUS provided the P8Z77-I Deluxe with four straight SATA ports which should be enough for any office PC or gaming system. What you'll not find on this little thing, is practical onboard power- and reset-buttons. Furthermore there is also no debug LED. Instead there is something more essential for a small PC, which is a WLAN module, which is capable of working with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequnecies.

Totally you'll find two fan header on the P8Z77-I Deluxe which really is much, but enough for an office PC. On the other hand you could also build a high end system with this little thing. In this case it might become difficult to provide plenty of fresh air. The fanheaders have been located in the top left corner.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel ASUS equipped the P8Z77-I Deluxe with four USB 3.0/2.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, two eSATA connectors, one Intel gigabit ethernet port, an optical out as well as an analogue audio panel. Furthermore there also is a BIOS reset button as well a a USB BIOS Flashback button. The upcoming Intel processors will also be shipped with an integrated graphics unit, therefore on this board you'll also find an HDMI, a DisplayPor and a DVI connector.

    3D Mark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze a lot out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

    Crysis 800 x 600, low details

Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX9 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

    Resident Evil 800 x 600, low details

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX9 benchmark we can again show CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

    Street Fighter 4 800 x 600, low details

Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

    Conclusion

    Overall   + -
At a first glance ASUS leaves a very good impression with its P8Z77-I Deluxe. There even is plenty of space around the CPU socket to install large coolers. Furthermore we liked that ASUS equipped this board with an eight phase power design, which will be able to power an overclocked rig for sure. Generally very nice to look at is the design. The colors the deluxe boards ship with are very well chosen.   - Design

    Layout   + -

Generally the ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe's Layout has been very well thought. In case of the SATA connectors you find four straight ones right above the PCI Exprsess x16 connector, close to the DIMM slots. Unique these days is the VRM design, which has been place on an additional raiser card. Like this ASUS has been able to get some more space to make this little board ready for overclocking. Furthermore it is even possible to install big CPU coolers. In this case we would recommend to make use of a down draft cooler which will provide the onboard components with fresh air too.

A closer look at our 3D performance comparison tables reveals quite a surprise. The little P8Z77-I Deluxe managed to get the first place! Therefore it's no surprise that this thing can be found in top positions in the gaming comparison tables. Regarding 2D benchmarks the results are quite solid. The result aren't mindblowing but at least they are in the center span of our charts. Overall there is solid 2D performance. Nevertheless there is one benchmark where this board performas badly: it's wPrime where it ranks last.   - 3D Benchmarks

    BIOS / Overclocking   + -
Also in the overclocking part the P8Z77-I Deluxe was a convincing product. Therefore it's been childrens play to reach the clock wall of our test CPU. Furthermore the UEFI BIOS is easy to use and one can quickly find the settings needed. There are BIOSes from other manufacturers which are nicer to look at, but that's it. During the tests it was just astonishing what's possible with the little board.   - Not well structured BIOS - UEFI-BIOS

    Recommendation   + -
If you should be looking for a mini ITX motherboard then you can think of the P8Z77-I Deluxe as a reference board. We really haven't seen anything else with the form factor which can keep up with the board.

We give the P8Z77-I Deluxe very good five out of five stars.
