The delivery found with the Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 850 Watt is very good. Even a high-end gaming system or an overclocking setup can be wired seamlessly. It's possible to attach three graphics cards to this PSU and up to twelve devices that have SATA power plugs. There is also the possibility to connect two EPS plugs to motherboards that offer this feature. Another, very useful, addition is the fancontroller in the delivery. Using it, the PSU fan as well as the fans in your chassis can be controled.

Cooler Master equips its 850 Watts Silent Pro Hybrid power supply with a 120 millimeter fan which is very silent. If the load is below 20 percent the fan wont spin and therefore this PSU makes no noise at all. Under 100 percent load the fan becomes subjectively audible. Cooler Master chose to put a fan into this power supply which is rated 0.20A at 12 volt.

A closer look at the Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 850 Watt's internals shows that there is good input filtering. There are for example two ferrite coils as well as metal oxide varistor. Furthermore there are four polyester X capacitors and another four ceramic Y capacitors. This is twice as much as recommended by standards. There is also a MOV which takes care of voltages peakes.

On the primary side there are two japanese capacitors from Panasonic/Matsushita. Each of them have a capacity of 330 uF at 420 Volt. Cooler Master put them in parallel and therefore there is a capacity of 660 uF at 105 °C. On the secondary side there is a mixture of Rubycon and Hippon Chemi-Con 105°C capacitors. In high-end PSUs these days all recifiers first generate +12 Volt voltage. Afterwards +5 Volt and +3.3 Volt are being generated.

On the backside of the doughterboard there are the connectors for the modular cable management. Internally the secondary side of the PSU has been connected to the doughterboard by several wires. Basically the Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 850 Watt is a very well built PSU but at this price point this can be expected.

Test setup

Regarding the power supply tests we refer to 80Plus.org. The guys over there do the certification of the power supplies. Behind 80Plus.org there is a company called Ecova Plug Load Solutions, which own professional testing equiment for internal power supplies, such as a Chroma 6000 ATE. With the system power supplies can be tested under standard conditions, which means that at the end of the day one gets comparable data.

Generally speaking the there are three different tests. First of all Plug Load Solutions goes for 20 percent load on the power supply. At this point they measure input and output power and calculate the efficiency as a result. Furthermore they monitor the different voltages - +12V, -12V, 3.3V, 5V and 5Vsb. With these values taken one can see whether the power supply complies with a five or a ten percent deviation standard. After that they do also keep an eye on power factor correction, concerning which 1 is the ideal value.

In case somebody is looking for further information on how 80Plus.org conducts it tests, then we can recommend the following PDF.

Conclusion

With the Silent Pro Hybrid 850 Watt, Cooler Master presents a very good power supply. More than 91.1 Percent efficiency at 50 Percent load is a very good value and as a result thermal dissipation power is low. This implicates a noise level which is low too because there isn't much heat to be removed by a fan. Always practical is a cable management and furthermore we like the number of integrated cables. There really is enough in the delivery to make any enthusiast happy.

A cable management is always a good thing because of the simple reason that it allows the user to only connect the cables really needed to wire a system as neatly as possible. With five molex connectors and twelve SATA connectors it shouldn't be a problem to wire an absolute high-end system. Also the fact that you can natively connect a three-way-SLI/Crossfire setup shows the Silent Pro Hybrid preferred area of application.

If we look at the performance values, the Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 850 Watt shows very good stability under load conditions. If we look at average deviations, we see that they are very low on all rails. Therefore the power supply does it's job in a rock solid manner.

For the Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 850 Watt receives very good five out of five stars.
