    Features

T-Series UEFI BIOS Biostar also equips their motherboards with graphical UEFI BIOS. The interface is well structured and allows quick navigation.

T-Overclocker With T-Overclocker you get a Windows based software, which can be used to overclock the system once windows has already booted. For this purpose you get for example OC presets which can be loaded to quickly and easily reach higher clock speeds. Furthermore the fans can also be adjusted too via this software.

    Layout

The TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker with a black PCB and black expansion slots. Southbridge cooler as well as the coolers on the current converters get an orange cover which really looks nice and gives this board an individual touch. Furthermore we like that there are only those three orange spots on the board. Like this the board comes with a calm design, which is still unique.

Biostar equipped their latest TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker motherboard with a 13 phase VRM design. This really is enough even for overclocking. In a later stage we will check what this board is capable of regarding extreme overclocking.

    Totally you'll find four DIMM-slots on the Biostar TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker and it supports DDR3 2600 (OC) / 2400 (OC) / 2133 (OC) / 1866 (OC) / 1600 / 1333 / 1066 MHz.

The current converters are being held at adequate temperatures via a passive heatpipe cooling solution. There are two separate cooling blocks covering the area which are connected via a heatpipe. The southbridge got a cooling block too, which has not been integrated into the heatpipe loop of the VRM. The fact that the cooling blocks around the CPU socket aren't too big makes it comfortable to install a big aircooler. We also noticed the very high manufacturing quality of the cooling blocks.

    Connectors and I/O

Totally Biostar equipped the TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker with eight angled SATA ports which should be enough for any office PC or gaming system. There are also practical onboard power- and reset-buttons. Biostar also equipped the TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker with a debug display which is very useful if you should once have issues with one of the components in your system. It is quite common that the last PCI-Express x16 slot is also the expansion slot is the closest to the bottom edge of the board. That has the consequence that the connectors at this place aren't accessible anymore. The TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker is no exception in this case. On the other hand there is two slots of space between the first and the second full size PCI Express port. This means that an SLI setup will be very well ventilated.

Totally you'll find only three fan headers on the Biostar TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker which isn't much. Especially for a high-end system more fan headers will be needed. The absolute minimum in this case are four fan headers. One of the connectors is on the right side above the CPU and the other two can be found at the bottom edge of the board. On the other hand practical is the fact, that the fans rotation speed can be controled via the BIOS or via a software.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel Biostar equipped the TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker with two USB 3.0/2.0 ports, four USB 2.0 port, one eSATA 6 Gbps ports, one gigabit ethernet port, an analogue audio panel, an HDMI port, a VGA connector and a DisplayPort connector.

    BIOS

What you're meanwhile getting with every single board is the feature to save and afterwards reload different BIOS profiles. Generally Biostar succeeded in creating a well structured BIOS. The UEFI BIOS awaits you with a graphical user interface, throughout which you can navigate using not only your keyboard but also your mouse. At this stage we're hoping that Biostar is going to improve the looks a bit. We like the icons in the dock but the menus and the colors don't look really nice. If you click the "O.N.E." button you see all the different overclocking settings which make it easy to overclock.

    3D Mark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze a lot out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

    Crysis 800 x 600, low details

Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX9 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

    Resident Evil 800 x 600, low details

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX9 benchmark we can again show CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

    Street Fighter 4 800 x 600, low details

Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

    Conclusion

    Allgemein   + -
The TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker  generally is an interesting board. In combination with a down-draft CPU cooler this motherboard will be cooled very efficiently. This will, as a consequence, extend the components lifespan. With the "Thermal Radar" the TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker  offers good possibilities to control the temperatures and airflow in your case. Using the corresponding software one can control the fans connected to the board and therefore realize highly efficient cooling.   - Design - Only 3 fan header

    Layout   + -

Generally the ASUS TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker s layout is well thought. Once more very practical are the angled SATA connectors. There are also practical power/reset buttons onboard as well as a debug LED. Unfortunately the last expansion slots is a full size PCI Express port, which means that if you choose to install a dual slots graphics card at this place you're going to cover the connectors at the bottom edge of the board. On the other hand there are two slots between the PCIe-x16 slots which means that an SLI or CrossFire setup will get a perfect environment when it comes to cooling.

      - Angled SATA connectors - Two slots between first two PCIe-x16 slots - Power/Reset/Clr-CMOS Button

    Performance   + -
A quick look at our overall rankings shows that the Biostar board is on the second to last spot in our comparison tables. Regarding 2D performance we find it in the center span of our comparison tabels. Basically you can see that Biostar would really have to optimize performance of this board to reach the same level like the big brand in the business. In quite a few 3D benches this board managed a poor last or second to last spot. Shifting the focus to power consumption shows that it's also ranks in the center span.   - SiSoft Sandra
    - Super Pi

    - 3D Mark Vantage CPU

    BIOS / Overclocking   + -
Also in the overclocking part the TZ77XE4 was a convincing product. Therefore it's been childrens play to reach the clock wall of our test CPU. Furthermore the UEFI BIOS is easy to use and one can quickly find the settings needed. There are BIOSes from other manufacturers which are nicer to look at, but that's it.   - Not well structured BIOS - UEFI-BIOS

    Recommendation   + -
Recommending the Biostar TZ77XE T-Overclocker is quite difficult. Basically it isn't a bad motherboard and the only thing we really didn't like is the fact that there are just three fan header. If there wasn't the poor 3D performance we would have liked this board. But this way we think it's an alternative for people who want to try something different.

    Rating
We give the Biostar TZ77XE4 T-Overclocker sufficient three out of five stars.
