Front

Overview

The front of SilverStones TemJin TJ04 is simple, elegant and therefore timeless. What you find there is an aluminium plate which is no less than seven millimeters thick. Furthermore it is black and hairline brushed. In the bottom area there are status LEDs as well as power and reset button. In the upper part there are four 5.25 inch slots. On top, front facing, you can find two USB 3.0 ports as well as a microphone and headphone connector.

Back

Overview

Next to the usual slot bezels of which you're going to find eight, there is space for an additional 120 millimeter fan, which will be placed right behind the CPU cooler. In general the back of this case looks quite unspectacular. Both side panels are kept in place by the use of four thumbscrews. Furthermore there are two holes to route tubes from a watercooling system through.

Right Side

Overview

The panel on the right side looks quite unspectacular. The only thing that is special about it concerns the ventilation area in the bottom left corner. Behind it you can find a 120 millimeter fan which keeps the temperature of the hard drives installed at a reasonable level. In the delivery there is a very interesting goodie, especially if you plan on building a file server with up to nine 3.5 inch hard drive, which would be the maximum for the preinstalled hard drive cage. Therefore what you get are additional cooling blocks, which can be put on the hard drives using screws to provide even more efficient cooling.
If you look a the bottom area you can spot a nice surprise: there is quite a lot of space between the side panel and the motherboard tray. This way routing the cables on the back side of the motherboard tray will cause no issues when you try to put the side panel back in place. Another practical thing concerns the numerous hole one can find in the motherboard tray. Like this it's possible to wire this case very neatly. Last but not least there is a big hole in the motherboard tray where the CPU cooler goes. Therefore it's easy to install a CPU cooler when the board has already been put in place.

Left Side

Overview

Like the left side panel also the one on the right side of the case is unspectacular. If you take it off you'll see for example the hard drive cage which is thightened to the case by four screws. To install hard drives comfortably one has to remove the hard drive cage. Furthermore the cage comes with a handle that allows to remove it comfortably.
Generally this case is quite spacious for its size. Furthermore it's practical that 5.25 inch drives can be installed screwless. Once the hardware is in place one can see that the TJ04 really allows for cables to be routed very neatly to the backside of the motherboard tray. As a result there will be efficient cooling of the components.

At this point of the review we're going to show what we didn't like about the TJ04. Generally there are really a lot of screws. It doesn't matter what you do on the case but for most of the things you'll need a screw driver. We would have loved to see more snap-in locks or at least thumb screws with metric threads to which keep the slot bezels and the hard drive cage in place. Something else we noticed when installing our power supply we use for testing. The cage for 2.5 inch drives is really close to the PSU. If you have a power supply with cable management, that is a littlebit longer than the ATX specs suppose, some of the connectors will be blocked. Should you be owner of 2.5 inch drives and this type of PSU, then you're left with no other alternative than placing the 2.5 inch cage in 3.5 inch cage and therefore block some of the 3.5 inch spaces.

Top

Overview

Like the side panels the top is unspectacular. The only thing which is special concerns the air filter below which is exchangable and comes with a snap-in machanism. Furthermore you'll find two USB 3.0 ports as well as a headphone and a microphone port.

Bottom

Overview

At the bottom of the case you find for example the four screws which have to be untightened to remove the 2.5 inch hard drive cage. Furthermore there are four plastic feet which provide the case with a safe stand. What you can also find are two airfilters. One can be found where the power supply goes and the other is below an optional 120 millimeter fan.

Conclusion

General   + -
The SilverStone TJ04 is a well though, midi tower case. Especially the interior layout is very well done and one can see at a first glance that the engineers at SilverStone have thought a lot to make this case practical. But still, there are things we would wish to see improved: first there are the edges which could cause injuries when one is not very skilled, second you have to release quite a significant amount of screws to install your hardware and the third thing concerns the partial incompatibility to fully modular PSUs with then 2.5 inch hard drive cage hasn't been removed. .   - Design
- Interior layout
- Numerous screws
- 2.5 inch hard drive cage, which interferes with fully modular PSUs

Manufacturing quality / Ergonomics   + -
Overall the build quality is on a good level. The side panels could be a bit stiffer but on the other hand the thin material keeps the total weight low. As we've already mentioned there are sharp edges where not so skilled or impatient people could injure themselves. We very much liked the hard drive cage which offers space for up to nine 3.5 inch drives. Furthermore there aluminium cooling blocks in the delivery which can be attached to the hard drives to provide even more efficient cooling.   - Build quality
- Interior Space
- Weight
- Fan loud at 1200 rpm
- Sharp edges

Design   + -
SilverStone equipped the TJ04 with its characteristic front plate. As usual this part of the case is made of aluminium and it therefore leave a high qualitative impression. Generally the tower comes with a design which is nice to look at and targets a broad audience. Nevertheless the tower wont be overlooked at a LAN party.   - Design

Recommendation   + -
We can recommed the TJ04 to everybody who's looking for a midi tower which can cope with high-end hardware or numerous hard drives.   - Gaming-PC
- Desktop PC
- File Server

Rating
The SilverStone TJ04 receives good four out of five stars. The case comes at a price piont of est. CHF 150.- (est EUR 125.-).
