Today is the official launch date of NVIDIAs highly anticipated high-end graphics cards. As you might guess, we're talking about their new GeForce GTX 680 monster which should be powerful engouh to show AMD who's the boss in business. Today we received a reference design card from ASUS and what has been discussed for a while is true, NVIDIA changed the looks of the card.

Technical data / specifications
The
GeForce GTX 680 is NVIDIAs new flagship model regarding their GPU portfolio.
This card is based on the GK104 chip which is being manufactured using TSMCs new
28 nanometer process technology. At a first glance you can see that NVIDIA has
changed the logo as well as the design of the cooler. Generally we like it.
Looking at cock speeds we see that the GPU runs at 1006 MHz and the GDDR5
memory clocks at 6000 MHz. Furhtermore there is 256 bit memory interface we
results in a XXXX Megabyte per second memory bandwidth. In total there is 2'048
Megabyte of GDDR5 memory.
The GPU itself consists of 3.54 billion transistors. The architectural
hierarchy starts with a so called GigaThread Engine, which marshals processed
and unprocessd information between the GPU and the PCI-Express 3.0 system
interface. Further down in the hierarchy there are four Graphics Processing
Clusters (GPCs), which can be seen as a common resource. At this point you'll
also find a the raster eingine and two streaming multiprocessors (SMs). Altough
NVIDIA decided to change their name which means that they're now called SMX. A
closer look at the SMX shows that they support a new PolyMorph 2.0 engine, an
instruction cache, 192 CUDA cores and furhter first level caches. If you do the
maths based on four GPCs with two SMXs each, 16 SMXs, 192 CUDA Cores, we get a
total of 1536 CUDA cores. This is three times as much as you can find on a
GeForce GTX 580, which supported "only" 512 CUDA Cores. There are also four
raster units, which means that there are 32 ROPs, eight geometry units, whereby
each features with a tessellation unit as well as third level cache.

Delivery
About the
delivery we have to say that it is really tight. The card ships well bolstered,
that it's almost impossible that something breaks during transportation.
There
is a manual, a driver CD and an power adaptor cable. There really should be at
least on adaptor from for example DVI to HDMI or DVI to VGA.

3DMark 11
3DMark 11 is
Futuremarks latest benchmark for the entire graphical subsystem. The
benchmark uses DirectX 11 and it supports all recent features which can
possibly generate high load on a GPU. Therefore you find tessellation,
compute shader calculations, divers lighting effects and different
depth of filed animations. Following we publish values regarding the
performance preset of 3DMark 11.

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a
recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long:

Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil uses nearly every modern
rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft
Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and
static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been
optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11
ready. By using the DirectX9 as well as the DirectX10 benchmark we can
again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the
CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high
resolutions.

What should I say. I mean the GeForce GTX
680 leaves the AMD high-end Radeon HD 7970 in a cloud of dust. This is
especially remarkable if we consider that the GeForce GTX 680 also needs
less power than the AMD card. With their 1536 CUDA cores NVIDA seems to
have a really big advantage over their competition. Generally it is just
astonishing how easy the GeForce GTX 680 leaves the Radeon HD 7970
behind. |

Regarding Performance
one can see that the GeForce GTX 680 is quite a bit faster than the
Radeon HD 7970. Especially in 3D Mark 11 we see that the GTX 680 is able
to create quite a big gap to the competitor. What is also very
impressive is the efficiency of this card. If you keep in mind that the
GTX 680 needs less power at higher overall frame rates then you see how
good this GK104 chip really is. Another very positive side effect of the
lower overall dissipation power is the noise level which in 2D modes is
unhearable. In a closed case you can start hearing the fan somewhere
between 40 and 50 percent rotation speed. |

Also when
it comes to overclocking the GTX 680 is a lot of fun. Quite easily it's
been possible to overclock the card to 1'200 MHz on the GPU and 6'600 on
the memory. |
