ASUS EAH5550
Category : AMD
Published by Christian Ney on 23.06.11
With the EAH5550 ASUS has AMD's low end product in its portfolio that comes with PCB layout made by ASUS themselves. This card is based on the RV870 architecture which has been fully reworked for the entry level market. Never the less we're curious how this thing will perform in our benchmark parcours. For a small teaser: this card proves quite decent and overclocking was a lot of fun.

On the following pages we will show you the strenghts and weaknesses of the ASUS EAH5550.

Technical data / specifications

The Radeon HD 5550 is powered by the Redwood LE graphics processor which differs from the Redwood Pro that powers the Radeon HD 5570. Indeed, the HD 5550 has only 320 SP and 550 MHz on the core while the HD 5570 is running at 650 MHz with 400SP. Anyway, these graphics processors are based on the RV870 and target entry market segment. Despite the fact that this card is part of the entry level market, Asus designed his own PCB which provides a red color with a single slot cooling system and a low profile PCB while the reference card designed by ATI/AMD uses a dual slot cooler and a full size PCB. Unfortunately the EAH5550's cooler isn't that silent, we even have to say that it's really noisy as it appears to not be regulated by the BIOS and not Asus' SmartDoctor software. To come back to the specs, DirectX 11 compatibility and 40 nm process, the card is powered by 8 ROP and 320 Shader Units with GDDR3 memory using a 128Bit bus wide interface.

Preview / Delivery

For the EAH 5550, ASUS uses their standard tiny box. Everything has its specific place and in the delivery you find an installation CD, a manual and two low profile brackets plus a 10percent offer for Battlefield Bad Company 2. Therefore the delivery is sufficient and finally we have not a game bundled but at least a discount which is better than nothing.

Overclocking

For our overclocking test we used the delivered software ASUS SmartDoctor. Of course, with this kind of mainstream graphic cards, it's not possible to raise the core voltage via software. Never the less we managed to overclock the card by far more than 50 percent to a staggering 868 MHz on the Core and 1'138 MHz on the memory. These clocks were 3DMark 11 stable which means that there neither crashes nor artifacts. For the record: stock clocks are 550MHz (core) and 800MHz (memory) so the overclocking potential of this card is more than 300 MHz on both core and memory. Which allowed us to win 50 % performance over the stock HD 5550. From 1'000 points to 1'500 points, it's the first time ever for us to see a 50 % improvement.

3DMark 11

3DMark 11 is Futuremarks latest benchmark for the entire graphical subsystem. The benchmark uses DirectX 11 and it supports all recent features which can possibly generate high load on a GPU. Therefore you find tessellation, compute shader calculations, divers lighting effects and different depth of filed animations. Following we publish values regarding the performance preset of 3DMark 11.

3DMark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX9 as well as the DirectX10 benchmark we can again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

Conclusion

General   + -
The entry level derivate of the RV870 architecture leaves us with mixed feelings. On one side for CHF 90.- (est. EUR 69.-)  as retail price, the EAH5550 can be a good choice to upgrade a very old graphics card when building a new computer that should have a low price tag. You will be able to play old games smoothly and for the more recent titles you'll have to lower the resolution as well as the details and filtering options in order to make them playable. On the other side such cards aims at HTPC use but for this the fan simply is too noisy.   - One slot cooling system - Low profile - Noisy

Performance   + -
The EAH 5550 is certainly not a graphics card for hardcore gamers with an average of 13 fps in high end gaming. But if you lower the graphics details and the resolution to 1280 x 1024, then you will be able to enjoy playing your games smoothly. With 46 fps under DIRT 2, the game performs ok. We also tested the video playback ability, and the card performed well. Only for the MPEG-2 HDTV video playback it did two times less than his competitor the GT430. . - Casual Gaming - HD Gaming - Video Playback MPEG-2 HDTV

Overclocking   + -
Of course we tested the overclocking capabilities of this card. For us it doesn't matter if it's a low end or high end card. We managed to run 3DMark 11 Performance with 868 MHz on the core and 1'134 MHz for the memory, which a 318 MHz clock increas regarding the CPU and 334 MHz for the memory. This is an overclocking of way more than 50 % overclocking which causes the card to score significantly higher in 3DMark11. It was even able to beat the NVIDIA GT 440 then which is quite a bit more expensive.   - 868 MHz GPU / 1'134 MHz Memory - 50 % OC
