Original ImageWith the Core i7 990 X Intel has a new flagship in its portfolio. Therefore they decided to increase the multiplyer by one step which results in a clock speed of 3.46 GHz. Thanks to this CPUs six cores and twelve threads one can expect it to get the performance crown.

The Gulftown CPU


With Gulftown Intel presents Bloomfields bigger brother which should show it's muscles especially in the high-end desktop market. Looking at the Core i7 990 X Intel decided to choose a higher default multiplier. Therefore this native six core CPU now clocks with 3.46 GHz. As soon as the Turbo kicks in the CPU is being overclocked by another two multiplier steps or in other words 266 MHz. In this case the CPU is going to operate at 3.73 GHz. Like its predecessor also the Core i7 990 X comes with hyperthreading and you'll therefore see a total of twelve threads in Windows task manager.





Already with the Bloomfield Intel has been very proud of the scalability of Nehalems architecture, respectively the relative easyness to adapt the architecture to different markets. As a consequence it isn't a surprise that there haven't been many changes to the "Die" itself. The only conspicuity is the fact that the Gulftown CPUs carry about 400 million more transistors than their Bloomfield equivalents.

3DMark 06

3DMark 06 is getting older these days. Therefore if you are using really powerful graphic cards you will hit CPU limitation which means that the graphic card isn't the bottleneck in the system. This is also the reason why in recent high-end desktop systems 3DMark 06 scales nicely with the CPU and the graphic card has much less influence on the scores.

3DMark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Cinebench

The test procedure consists of two main components: The first test sequence is dedicated to the computer's main processor. A 3D scene file is used to render a photoreaslistic image. The scene makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders. During the first run the benchmark only uses one CPU (or CPU core) to ascertain a reference value. On computers that have multiple CPUs or CPU cores and on those that simulate multiple CPUs (via HyperThreading or similar technolgies), Cinebench will run a second test using all available CPU power.

Crysis DirectX10

Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX10 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

PT Boats Knights of Seas DirectX10

PT Boats Knights of Seas is based on the Direct-3D-10 API, supports multicore CPUs and comes with a physics engine. Also at this point we see a good scaling of the CPU at low resolutions and nearly no influence when applying high resolutions.

Resident Evil 5 DirectX10

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX10 benchmark we can again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

Street Fighter4

Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

Power consumption

Hereby we take the power consumption under load as well as idle. To generate a load situation we use SiSoft Sandra's Burn-In Module and measure the whole systems power consumption. The values we take when the System just booted into Windows and the load drops.

Conclusion

With its recent Gulftown CPU's Intel has a really fast processor in its portfolio. But as usual their extreme processors come at a very high price tag. For CHF 1179.- (est. EUR 786.-) you get this very exclusive piece of hardware which is future proof because of its massive performance and high thread count. One can definitely say that six of these highly efficient cores paired up with Intels hyperthreading are at least one generation ahead of todays operating systems.

Because of the reason that Gulftown is an up scaled version of Bloomfiield it can profit from all the advantages the Nehalem architecture comes with. The Gulftwon models therefore are equipped with SMT as well as an overworked Turbo-Mode which now is able to raise the clock speeds up to 266 MHz or in other words by two multiplyer steps. Like this the enduser gets a real performance benefit in single threaded applications when the clock speed is as high as possible.

If we look at Gulftowns performance the 990 X is a little bit faster than its predecessor the Core i7 980 X. Because of the clockspeed which had been increased by another 133 MHz to 3.46 GHz one can see a small performance advantage over the i7 980 X. Also in game benchmarks Gulftown is able to make a lasting impression. Every game we tested performed better but we still wouldn't recommend a Gulftown for gaming. The additional money you pay for this CPU is better spent with a high-end graphics card if it only comes down to gaming.

As expected Gulftown isn't the most economic CPU. Never the less 128 Watt in idle is a very good value for such a high-end CPU. This result is down to the shrinked structures which are now only 32 Nanometers wide. But for those expecting big numbers here we have one: under load our 990 X testsystem needed 254 Watts to operate.

If you are looking for the most powerful desktop CPU available then the Core i7 990 X is excatly what you want to buy. There is no other CPU these days which can be compared. Therefore we recommend this CPU to PC enthusiasts as well as overclockers who have the pocket money to buy this very nice piece of hardware. Of course a Core i7 990 X also is a very good investment for a workstation which mainly does rendering operations or other highly multithreaded tasks.
