ASUS E35M1-I Deluxe / AMD Fusion vs Intel Atom
Category : FT1
Published by Christian Ney on 21.03.11
With the E35M1-I Deluxe ASUS presents its flagship motherboard regarding AMD Fusion architecture. It awaits multimedia users and people who need a noiseless and very energy efficient computer. It even offers decent performance and it's even able to destroy Intels Atom.
We'd like to thank ASUS for providing us with the testsample.

The E35M1-I Deluxe from ASUS is their first high-end motherboard regarding AMDs latest solution named Fusion. What's lying in front of us is USB3.0, Wifi, SATA3.0, Radeon HD 6310 onboard, AMD E-350 Zacate dual core CPU and much more.

It's been almost seven years now that AMD released a mobile CPU. This year AMD showed  a new architecture named Brazos (Bobcat CPU + Zacate GPU) ending up as a so called APU with codename Fusion, to provide an alternative to Intel Atom which used to dominate this market segment. Using PCMark Vantage we are able to show you performance for real-world applications such as video encoding, video playback, web browsing ... We are also going to compare power consumption too, to show the efficiency of Fusion against Atom.

Presentation

The ASUS E350M1-I Deluxe comes on a black PCB with expansion slots, one DIMM slot and the power connector colored in blue. Furthermore the different colors creates a very homogenous look that is pleasing for ones eye.

Layout

For once we find a single passive heatsink that takes care of cooling everything CPU/IGP and the FCH (also called Northbridge) while other manufacturers are providing an active cooling system with a fan. This means that the E350M1-I Deluxe doesn't make any noise and during the tests it appears to be very efficient and managed to keep the setup at adequate temperatures under load conditions.
On the following picture we can see the two DDR3 Slots that come in single channle because Zaccate is not a dual channel architecture. However tests prove that only in certain cases dual channel performs better, in most cases single channel is well enough. On this board, you can use up to 8 GB of memory @ 1333 MHz.
We can also find a PCIe x16 for anybody who wants to make use of a low profile graphics card which is more powerful than the IGP. Right above that PCIe you can find a Mini-PCIe used by the WiFi Card which has been connected to antennas at the Back panel.

At this point you can find the front panel connectors such as Power/Reset and activity LED for both CPU and HDD. As well as the chassis intrusion connector. What would have been very useful too is a CLR_CMOS button to easily erase the BIOS. On the second picture you can find the CLR_CMOS jumper and Turbo_Key_II button just next to the CPU power connector.

I/O

The rear panel is very well equipped, you can find the video connectors that are DVI and HDMI. Other connectors are PS/2 for both keyboard or mouse, two Wifi antennas, one bluetooth, two USB 3.0, four USB 2.0, one eSATA 3.0 and audio connector panel as well as an optical connector.

ASUS equipped the E35M1-I Deluxe with a total of five SATA3 connectors and an internal USB3 connector that can handle up to two USB3.0 ports. And two USB2.0 connectors that can both handle two USB2.0 ports.

At this point one can see the two fan connectors located behind the cooler. It would have been nice if there was a third fan header although two are enough.

Bundle

The delivery is well equipped, you can find an installation guide, the motherboard manual, a DVD with drivers and ASUS software suite, two antennas, the I/O shield and finally two SATA3 cables. Maybe you'd like to have another SATA3 cable in the delivery.

BIOS

The following settings are used in the whole test.

The BIOS is almost complete, and you are able to change a lot of settings, even save them into profiles. For an EFI BIOS it is well organised and intuitive.

PCMark Vantage Score

For our tests we used PCMark Vantage because while other system benchmarks are pure synthetics tests, PCMark Vantage provides real-world usage workloads, representing common tasks like web browsing, video encoding, video playback and many others. Futhermore PCMark Vantage takes your entire system capabilities. In our opinion this benchmark fits perfectly for HTPC configurations.

Power Consumption

At this point we measure the power consumption under idle and load conditions. Five minutes after Windows has loaded we check the idle power consumption. Afterwards we use OCCT in burn mode and measure the wattage under load.

Conclusion

Overall   + -
The ASUS E35M1-I Deluxe left a very good impression with it's nice design, and good performance. We were also surprised that they provided their board with an EFI BIOS. Meanwhile their BIOS is very easy to use. Regarding the overclocking capability don't worry, even on such a board you are able to overclock. AMD Fusion really surprised us, the AMD solution beats Intel Atom on every real-world benchmarks even if Atom has four threads.   - Performance
- Design
- EFI BIOS

Layout   + -
The layout has been very well thought. You will find everything you need to build an HTPC, such as five SATA3, up to four USB3, HD Audio. ASUS even equipped the E35M1-I Deluxe with a WiFi chip and antennas. The only expansion port available is a PCIe 16, while on other boards it's often a PCI.   - USB3 / SATA3
- Wifi
- 5 SATA3

Performance   + -
On our real world testing results AMD Fusion litterally destroyed Intel Atom. Even the fact that Atom has four threads and clocks with 1.8 GHz doesn't change anything. Also the power consumption is better. 30 Watts idle is very impressive and also under load conditions 49 Watts against 40 (idle) and 61 Watts for Intel Atom are astonishing. One more very good point is that the E35M1-I Deluxe is noiseless while other brand equip their boards with a fan. And of course also a big difference between both rigs, we were able do play all games using AMD Fusion while Intel Atom failed to launch all our games/benchmarks, this is due that the graphics part which really is outdated. Even our DX9 games didn't run on it.   - 30 Watts idle
- Noiseless
- 3D & 2D Performance
- DX11

Recommendation   + -
The ASUS E35M1-I Deluxe definitely is a good choice for a multimedia system or somebody who wants a noiseless and and very energy efficient setup. Furthermore we think that AMD Fusion is the best all in one solution on the market at the moment. We are waiting for mobile solutions powered by AMD Fusion that would be for sure must have.   - Office PC
- HTPC
- Multimedia
- Gaming PC

The ASUS E35M1-I Deluxe can be bought at Digtec to a price of CHF 175.- (ca. EUR 125.-).
