Platform, architecture and Features

Together with their new Phenom II X6 CPUs AMD launches its new 890 and 870 Chipset series where you'll find an FX and GX series. The GX will feature integrated graphics whereas the 890 is more the enthusisasts platform. There is for example a IOMMU (I/O Memory Mapping Unit) which help with addressing memory in virtualised environments. Very good is also that you might find up to six 6 Gbps SATA ports depending on the board. Furthermore the FX version has the ability to connect two PCIe X16 or four PCIe x8 slots. Also the new chipsets support Hyper Transport in Version 3.0.

On the Die-plot above you see very well each of the six cores with their level 1 and level 2 Chaches. On the left side of the picture you see the Level 3 cache which is six MBytes in size. At the time we wrote this article we unfortunately didn't know how many transistors can be found on the new AMD Phenom II X6 CPU.

We already know it from Intel and now also AMD presents its version of a Turbo mode. CPUs which feature AMD Turbo Core technology - as AMD calls it - have a "T" at the end of their names. The idea behind is the same as with Intel CPUs. When you have a single threaded application running the CPU clock rate is going to be increased. To stay within the TDP (Thermal Design Power) all the other five cores can be switched off. If you afterwards have another application that can make use of more three threads the CPU clocks down again but switches on the other cores.

Overclockers very much like AMDs OverDrive overclocking utility. Using it you can control almost everything regarding overclocking conveniently from Windows. AMD did a good job with OverDrive and it is even easy to use. If you look at it for the first time it might leave quite a messy impression but as soon as you start taking a closer look you will see that its very easy to use.

3DMark 06

3DMark 06 is getting older these days. Therefore if you are using really powerful graphic cards you will hit CPU limitation which means that the graphic card isn't the bottleneck in the system. This is also the reason why in recent high-end desktop systems 3DMark 06 scales nicely with the CPU and the graphic card has much less influence on the scores.

3DMark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Cinebench

The test procedure consists of two main components: The first test sequence is dedicated to the computer's main processor. A 3D scene file is used to render a photoreaslistic image. The scene makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders. During the first run the benchmark only uses one CPU (or CPU core) to ascertain a reference value. On computers that have multiple CPUs or CPU cores and on those that simulate multiple CPUs (via HyperThreading or similar technolgies), Cinebench will run a second test using all available CPU power.

Crysis DirectX10

Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX9 as well as DirectX10 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

Resident Evil 5 DirectX10

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX9 as well as the DirectX10 benchmark we can again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

Street Fighter4

Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

Overclocking

Using a very powerful Noctua NH-D14 aircooler we were able to reach 4.327 GHz at 1.45 Volt with the sample we have before the system rebooted throwing a bluescreen.

This time we also overclocked the CPU using liquid nitrogen. With the CPU at -196°C and at 1.812 Volt it was possible to push this little six core CPU all the way up to 6.170 GHz. At this point we also have to say that overclocking the current AMD CPUs is a lot of fun because all the CPUs we tested had no clodbug and it was therefore possible to just fill the LN2 pot to the rim and focus on overclocking.

Conclusion

AMD presents with its Phenom II X6 series solid mainstream CPUs which come with a very competitive pricing. Although AMD got more competition from Intel in this segment especially the Phenom II X6 1090T is a very good product.

Starting with the Futuremark Benchmarks we can say that the we were positively surprised by the performance of this CPU. In 3DMark06 AMDs sixcore CPU shows about the same overall efficiency as Intels CPUs. Therefore AMD reaches about the same results with the same clock speed as Intel. In Vantage we see that the AMD start to suffer a bit. Due to the fact that 3DMark Vantage has been optimized for massive multithreading Intel generally performans quite a bit better. Very interesting are the results in POV Ray and Cinebench. Comparing single core Cinebnech on a 1090T performance wise you'll find the equivalent with the Core i7 920 from Intel. As soon as you start using all cores the AMD CPU starts to perform much better compared to Intel and it can even outperform a Core i7 975. Looking at all the SiSoft Sandra benchmarks it gets a bit darker for the AMD CPUs. Only in the Multimedia and encryption benches AMD shows its teeth.
It turned out that it is quite difficult to quantify the results gathered in our gaming benchmarks. Therefore we have to postpone a specific recommendation until we finish our platform benchmark where we're going to test some more games. As it is we see that for example in Streetfighter 4 the new X6 perform exceptionally well but in Crysis it's very slow, which leaves a very mixed impression.

AMDs brandnow six core CPU is quite economic in idle mode. Under these circumstances it draws only 91 Watt from the power plug, which is a very nice result. This result is down to the AMDs effecient power saving technologies. Also under load it isn't that bad with 198 Watts. Although it needs quite a bit more power then Intels Dual-Channel platforms its still below the Core i7 920.

If you are looking for a CPU with an appealing price/performance ratio AMDs Phenom II X6 1090T will definitely be a good choice. Already at the launch you can find some very good motherboards as there are for example the ASUS Crosshair IV Formula and the MSI 890FXA-GD70 which come with a lot of features and are also good for overclocking.

All the new AMD six core processors are available at Digitec to the following prices:

All recent AMD CPUs are available at Digitec.
