When it comes to high-end overclocking motherboards, the Republic of Gamers Rampage series motherboards from ASUS basically define the pinnacle. With the Rampage V Edition 10 ASUS certainly doesn't want to break with this tradition. At a first glance, this EATX motherboard has been crammed with features and there are quite a few really interesting things. At this point we're definitely curious to find out what ASUS was able to come with to surprise us - again.

The Rampage V Edition 10 is basically ASUS refresh of the Rampage V Extreme, while this board has been optimized to work with Intel's new Broadwell-E processors as best as possible. Apart from that there is a ton of features, like for instance full RGB lighting, an even further improved onboard audio solution, U.2 as well as M.2 connectors and loads of other goodies.

Features

Digital Power Design

Since quite some time ASUS has been equipping its boards with digital power designs. Using the right software it is not only possible to adjust voltages while being in Windows one can now also control impedances. Furthermore this board features mosfets from International Rectifier as well as MicroFine chokes and 10K black metallic capacitors.

Aura Lighting

Aura Lighting is basically ASUS's name for extensive RGB lighting. For that purpose the company decided to backlight several different parts on this motherboard. There is for example the I/O shield, the shroud covering the I/O shield, the release clamps at the end of each PCI-Express x16 slot, the PCH heatsink as well as the entire right edge of the board. Apart from that there is also a header to connect RGB LED strips to the motherboard, which can then be controlled via ASUS's integrated software.

SupremeFX

The onboard audio on this board is very similar to the implementation we've seen on its predecessor, the Rampage V Extreme. Supporting up to eight channels, the SupremeFX solution received shielding from other onboard components. Apart from that there are high quality ELNA capacitors offering as clear as possible audio. ASUS is also covered the audio chip with black chrome to minimize electromagnetic interferences.
Nevertheless ASUS is taking the audio a step further with this board, basically shipping it with an external sound card for your 5.25 inch bay. A quick look under its bonnet quickly reveals there are some high quality components such as an ESS 9018M2M DAC, Nichicon and WIMA capacitors, a LM4562 and TPA6120 output stage, a sonic senseamp as well as a depop-relay.

Safe Slot

There are four full size PCIe slots on this particular board, which have been equipped with a steel frame. If you place a large and heavy gaming graphics card, while the board is mounted in a case, you will notice, that over time the slots starts to bend by a little bit. Furthermore, durgin rough transporting it can happen, that the PCIe slot break by the sheer force. In both cases the steel armor should help increasing protection of the PCIe slots. Apart from that also the memory slots received steel frames which helps increasing stiffness and also reduces electrical inteference.

M.2/U.2 Support

The ASUS Rampage V Edition 10 motherboard features an M.2 as well as a U.2 slot. Both slots have been wired directly to the X99 PCH via four PCI Express 3.0 lanes. In other words up to 32 Gbps can be pushed over the bus through these slots.

Layout

Already at a first glance the ASUS Rampge V Edition 10 is a great looking motherboard, with a simple yet attractive color scheme. Most of the board is black and there are some elements gray and some silver. Apart from that there is the RGB lighting we already mentioned, which allows you to make the board shine in your preferred color. The layout itself is well thought and since ASUS is always taking Intel's reference specifications regarding socket clearance into account, there is enough space to install large aircoolers. The fact that there are SATA connectors which have been angled by 90 degrees allows an easy installation of oversized graphics cards.

A closer look at the power design reveals that the solution ASUS used on this board is very similar to the one of its predecessor, the Rampage V Extreme. The CPU is backed up by eight phases, which are most likely controlled by a PWM chip from International Rectifier. Apart from that there are IR3553 power stages, which have been specified at 60A. Every single power stage can rely on a MOSFET on its high- as well as on its low side. In general ASUS is using very high-end components for the power design and the so called micro-fine alloy chokes make no exception. Furthermore there are 10K polymer and tantalum capacitors taking care of output filtering.

There are eight DIMM-slots on the Rampage V Edition 10. Officially supported is DDR4 with up to 3333 MHz. There is enough space between the DIMM-slots and the CPU socket which means that you won't run into any compatibility problems with large coolers even when you choose to install RAM with big heatspreaders. Also supported are Xtreme Memory Profiles (XMP) in version 2.0.

The heatsinks of today’s motherboards, especially when it comes to the high-end motherbaords, greatly add to the overall looks of a product. What ASUS is doing usually when it comes to their ROG motherboards is changing the shape of the individual blocks by a little bit in order to freshen up the looks in general. A great idea, which emerged during the past year was to make the VRM cooler next to the DIMM slots on the left side cover the I/O connectors. This way the design appears to be cleaner and less crowded. A closer look reveals, that there is a heatpipe for even heat distribution between memory and CPU power design. There are two more heatsinks on this motherboard. The one between CPU socket and first PCIe slot features backlight, which makes the writing glow in the dark. Last but not least there is another aluminum block covering the PCH, which also receive lighting.

Connectors and I/O

On this board there are ten angled SATA ports, which are located as usual in the bottom half on the right hand side of the board. All of these ports offer SATA III capabilities with up to 6Gbps transfer speeds. Next to the usual SATA ports there are also two SATA Express connectors. All of them have been wired to the PCH. Shifting the focus to the expansion slots we find four PCI Express 3.0 as well as one x4 and one x1 slot. Should you be using a CPU offering 40 lanes there are the following numbers of lanes available in the case of single, dual, triple and quad GPU configurations: single x16, dual x16/16, triple x16/x8/x8, quad x8/x8/x16/x8 or x8/x8/x8/x8. Are you using a 28 lane CPU, then you can run single x16, dual x16/x8 and triple x8/x8/x8. Between the DIMM slots and the ATX power plug, there is an M.2 x4 slot, which supports up to 32 Gigabit per second throughput.

The Rampage V Edition 10 has been equipped with six 4-pin fan headers. The headers have been placed at different positions on the PCB, while allowing for short ways in order to attach fans easily.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel ASUS equipped the Rampage V Edition 10 with one PS2 mouse/keyboard connector, four USB 3.1 ports (2 x type A and 2 x type C), four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, two gigabit ethernet ports, connectors to attach an antenna for WiFi with ac standard, an optical out and an analogue audio panel. Furtheremore you'll also find a clear CMOS button and a ROG Connect switch.

BIOS

As usual the ASUS UEFI BIOS looks just great, which means the design is good and the menu is well structured. As soon as you enter the BIOS you see that with this motherboard all is about performance, since you arrive on the page with all the different clock speed and voltage settings. It’s just always surprising to see that with every new platform ASUS manages to set the bar for a great BIOS even higher. What’s just standard is that all the different voltages as well as clock speed can be changed on the first page. Other than that there are pre-defined overclocking profiles for CPU as well as memory overclocking. As we’ve already mentioned in the overclocking part before, this BIOS/board is here to drive your hardware at the absolute limit.

Conclusion

Allgemein   + -
The Rampage V Edition 10 from ASUS is a product, which is close to perfection. Of course expectations towards a new flagship motherboard from ASUS are high but in the case of this board the vendor didn't fail. There is simply an armada of features and extreme overclockers will be happy as well. Usually when ASUS is launching a new high-end motherboard you can be rather sure, that it's going to be by far the most expensive board when compared to the competition. Well, with this board that's precisely the case. ASUS is asking 580 Euro for this board, which is really a lot. Nevertheless the RGB lighting in combination with the mostly black design make this board look beautiful all the time.   - Design

Layout   + -

Basically the ASUS Rampage V Edition 10's Layout has been very well structured and it's difficult to squeeze more features, especially useful overclocking features, on an EATX motherboard. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Apart from that there is also a new safe boot as well as a retry onboard. Both these buttons will be useful if you choose to overclock or even extreme overclock your system. Also the placement of the PCI-Express x16 is very well chosen. There is a total of four full sized PCI Express slots and all of them support PCIe Gen 3.0. In this case it is possible to build a Quad SLI/CF setup without running into issues. Furthermore there is one SATA Express port as well as a M.2 slot.

  - Angled SATA connectors - 4 x Full-Size PCI Express x16
- Power/Reset-Button onboard
- Debug display
- Space around the CPU socket

Performance   + -
A closer look at the performance of the Rampage V Edition 10 shows, that this board ranks first in our 3D performance comparison while in the 2D charts it achieves 8th place. We would have expected this board to be quicker in our 2D benchmarks. On another note we had a look at power consumption and in this case we clearly see that we have a board here that has been equipped with many additional chips, which in the end means, that power consumption is high and energy efficiency is not its strength.   - 3D performance - Power consumption

Overclocking / BIOS   + -
As you might have expected from ASUS you get an excellent BIOS which offers not only a boatload of tuning and tweaking options but is also very easy to use. Though ROG themed BIOS always comes with a touch that's a bit more technical it's still very well structured and it won't take long until one understands what's where.   - Clear arrangement - Sheer amount of options

Recommendation   + -
Should you be looking for a high-end overclocking motherboard, then the Rampage V Extreme is simply a great choice. Obviously you should have the necessary cash, since this board is no bargain.   - Overclocking
