With the X170-Extreme ECC Gigabyte has a somewhat different motherboard in its portfolio. Based on the C236 server chipset it combines server with gaming features. To what this combination adds up, that's what we're going to show you on the following pages.
The GA-X170-EXTREME ECC is a rather unusual motherboard from Gigabyte, which is based on Intels C236 server and workstation chipset and therefore comes with the corresponding feature set. Nevertheless Gigabyte decided to camouflage this board with a design attracting gamers. This combination is certainly different and we're curious to find out what is going to await testing the X170-Extreme ECC.

Since quite some time Gigabyte has been equipping its boards with digital power designs. There are for example black solid caps which are rated at a minimum 10'000 hours liefespan at 105°C. |

Sound Core 3D |
Gigabyte is offering a seriously beefed-up audio implementation for this motherboard. The center of it is a Creative Sound Core 3D Audiochip, which is being supported by an armada of additional chips. There is for example a Burr-Brown DAC and Gigabyte is using fine gold Nichicon caps as well as WIMA film cap. Furthermore there are swappable OP-AMPs for the front audio as well as for the left and the right channel. |

SATA Express
|
SATA Express is a new port for storage devices that basically combines two SATA connectors and bundles them. Each SATA Express port has been wired using two PCI Express Gen 3 lanes offering a total of 16 Gbps bandwidth. Compared to SATA-III with 6 Gbps bandwidth this is quite an improvement. |

M.2 / NVMe support

The new Gigabyte GA-X170-EXTREME ECC motherboard features two M.2 slot. This motherboard can be equipped with two SSDs M.2 form factor SSD and they have been wired to the PCH using four PCI Express Gen 3 lanes each. Therefore each slot offers up to 4 Gigabyte per second bandwidth. |

Layout
At a first glance the Gigabyte GA-X170-EXTREME ECC leaves a very good impression with its good looking design. The PCB has been kept in combination of black matte and grey. Apart from that there is a large shroud with digital camouflage design covering the I/O panel as well as the onboard sound. The aluminum heatsinks are solid and of good quality and they share the same design as the rest of the board. The layout itself is well-thought and there is for example plenty of space around the CPU socket ensuring there won’t be any compatibility issues. Looking for M.2 slots, we find two of them, while one is below the CPU socket, right above the first PCIe slot and the other has been located between the first and the second PCIe slot. The fact that there are SATA connectors which have been angled by 90 degrees allows for an easy installation of oversized graphics cards.
The Gigabyte GA-X170-EXTREME ECC comes with a digital 12+2 phase power design. It's important to Gigabyte that high quality components are being used for this motherboard. Each individual phase is backed up by one MOSFET and at least one solid cap. The solid black capacitors offer a minimum lifespan of 10'000 hours at 105°C.
The Southbrigde as well as the power design have been equipped with passive heatsinks featuring a nice design. All blocks have been very well manufactured and they’re not too large, which means there won’t be any compatibility issues. The blocks covering the VRM area have been connected by a heatpipe allowing for a more even heat dissipation.

Connectors and I/O
Gigabyte equipped the GA-X170-EXTREME ECC with a total of eight angled SATA ports. This is enough for any setup no matter if you're it’s your plan to build a workstation or a gaming/multimedia rig. Apart from that four times two SATA 6Gbps ports can be combined to a total of four SATA Express ports. Furthermore all SATA 6 Gbps connectors are directly wired to the PCH. As it can be expected from a high-end motherboard you'll also find practical onboard power- and reset-buttons in the top right corner of the board and there is also a debug display. Right above the first PCIe x16 slot there is an M.2 slot, while the second can be found above the second full-size PCIe x16 expansion slot.
In total you'll find five fan header on the GA-X170-EXTREME ECC which is more than enough, to provide a well equipped workstation or a gaming/multimedia rig with fresh air. It is also very practical that connectors feature 4-pin and therefore allow for PWM control. In this case it's really easy to change rotation speeds from within the BIOS or Windows. The fan headers are located around the CPU socket as well as spread over the motherboard.
Looking at the external connectors directly at the I/O panel Gigabyte equipped the GA-X170-EXTREME ECC with a P/S2 connector, five USB 3.0 ports. one USB 3.1 Type-A and one USB 3.1 Type-C connector, two gigabit ethernet ports, one DisplayPort, an HDMI out, an optical out and an analogue audio panel. According to Gigabyte the two yellow USB connectors offer less signal noise and are therefore especially suitable for attaching high-end audio gear such as USB DACs.

BIOS
The most recent version of Gigabyte's UEFI BIOS presents itself with an
attractive design. When entering the BIOS, the overview screen you see is very well structured and quite an improvement over the overloaded splash screen we saw with Z97 based boards. Especially less experience users will appreciate this menu.
If you wish back the good old times, where you were racing through the menus
hammering up and down arrows as well as the enter key ridiculously fast, you
just have to press F2 and there you go. Since this board is based on a server/workstation chipset overclocking is not possible and therefore there are no such features in the BIOS.

With the GA-X170-EXTREME ECC, Gigabyte leaves a convincing impression. For 225 Euro you get a motherboard with workstation chipset, that has been combined with features usually found with gaming motherboards. There is for example a nice design with camouflage looks. Apart from that there are two M.2 slot, which have been wired using four PCI Express Gen 3 lanes each. Furthermore we like the onboard audio, which is based on a Creative Core 3D chips as well as a Burr-Brown DAC and high-end capacitors. |

The layout of the Gigabyte GA-X170-EXTREME ECC is very well thought. The onboard power and reset buttons as well as the debug LED are once more practical additions. There is a total of three reinforced, full-sized PCI Express slots, which are wired using x16, x8 and x4 lanes. We also like the fact that there are two M.2 slots, which can be found in between PCI Express slots. In general there is aboslutely nothing to complain about regarding the layout of this motherboard. But a such a high price that is something that can be expected. |

Calculating the average of all 3D as well as all 2D benchmarks we find this board on the sixth spot in both cases. On another note, we had a look at power consumption an in this case the GA-X170-Extreme ECC ranks fifth. This is definitely a solidly performing motherboard with a mature BIOS. |

As we already mentioned, this board is based on the C236 workstation and server chipset. Therefore overclocking your CPU is not possible. Apart from that you have the possibility to install a Xeon CPU in combination with ECC memory, which enables even higher levels of realiability.
A look at the BIOS shows the same design, which can also be found with the Z170 gaming motherboards. The menu is easy to use and you’ll quickly find all the settings you want to change. |

The Gigabyte GA-X170-Extreme ECC is something of a different board. If you want to build a workstation with a Xeon processor and ECC memory, then this motherboard is a great choice. We can especially recommend the X170 Extreme ECC in combination with an intel Xeon E3-1230 v5 processor. This is actually the cheapest Intel quad core CPU, which supports Hyperthreading. Therefore it’s possible to build a very well-priced workstation, while also benefitting from the C236’s server feature set. |
