One year after the launch of the Bloomfield based i7 processors Intel now officially presents the Lynnfield product line. Hereby they show off three new mainstream CPUs: The i7 870, the i7 860 and the i5 750. The all are entirely based on the Nehalem microarchitecture whereas a the memory controller is limited to dual-channel operation. But the most important new feature should definitely be the enhanced Turbo-Mode which is now able to increase clock speeds automatically by up to 666 MHz.

Die Lynnfield CPU
With
Lynnfield Intel presents Bloomfields smaller brother which should show it's
muscles especially in the mainstream market. In direct comparison to Bloomfield,
Lynnfield is equipped with a dual-channel instead of a triple-channel memory
interface. The i5 models have no hyperthreading but every single Lynnfield CPU
comes with an enhanced Turbo-Mode. Intels arguments for a Turbo-Mode which is
able to dynamically overclock the CPU by up to 666 MHz or in other word five
multiplyer stpes is, that most of the software on the market is still not
optimized for multithreaded CPUs and therefore the user mainly profits from
higher clock speeds than massive parallelism.
Already with the Bloomfield Intel has been very proud of the
scalability of Nehalems architecture, respectively the relative easyness to
adapt the architecture to different markets. As a consequence it isn't a
surprise that there weren't many changes on the "Die" itself. The only
conspicuity is the fact that the Lynnfield CPUs carry about 40 million more
transistors than their Bloomfield equivalents.

3DMark 06
3DMark 06 is getting older these days. Therefore if you are using really powerful graphic cards you will hit CPU limitation which means that the graphic card isn't the bottleneck in the system. This is also the reason why in recent high-end desktop systems 3DMark 06 scales nicely with the CPU and the graphic card has much less influence on the scores.

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a recent system. Cinebench
The test procedure consists of two main components: The first test sequence is dedicated to the computer's main processor. A 3D scene file is used to render a photoreaslistic image. The scene makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders. During the first run the benchmark only uses one CPU (or CPU core) to ascertain a reference value. On computers that have multiple CPUs or CPU cores and on those that simulate multiple CPUs (via HyperThreading or similar technolgies), Cinebench will run a second test using all available CPU power.

Pov-Ray is a raytracer which comes with an integrated benchmark routine that allows CPU single- and multicore performacne. Therefore a predefined 3D-Scene is being rendered twice by the CPU and as a result you get a PPS (Pixel per Secon) value.

WinRAR is a well known archivier. It is highly efficient and it also comes with an integrated benchmark routine. We also do a real world application be archiving a folder which exists on the hard drive.

Crysis DirectX10
Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX9 as well as DirectX10 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

PT Boats Knights of Seas DirectX10
PT Boats Knights of Seas is based on the Direct-3D-10 API, supports multicore CPUs and comes with a physics engine. Also at this point we see a good scaling of the CPU at low resolutions and nearly no influence when applying high resolutions.

Resident Evil 5 DirectX10
Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX9 as well as the DirectX10 benchmark we can again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

Street Fighter4
Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

take the power consumption under load as well as idle. To generate a load situation we use SiSoft Sandra's Burn-In Module and measure the whole systems power
consumption. The values we take when the System just booted into Windows and the load drops.

Conclusion
With the new
Lynnfield CPU Intel presents a very interesting new product line. Only the Core
i7 870 CPU comes with a rather high price tag. For example with an i7 860 CPU it
is possible to configure a system where the base components as CPU, mainboard
and memory only cost about CHF 600.- (est. EUR 400.-). Therfore Intel is now
also in the mainstream sector at least one step ahead from the competitor AMD.
They now have a product line in their portfolio which is able to convince
regarding price and performance.
Because
of the reason that Lynnfield is a down scaled version of Bloomfiield it can
still profit from most of the advantages the Nehalem architecture comes with.
The i7 Models therefore are equipped with SMT as well as an overworked
Turbo-Mode which now is able to raise the clock speeds up to 666 MHz or in other
words by five multiplyer steps. Like this the enduser gets a real performance
benefit in single threaded applications when the clock speed is as high as
possible.
If we look at the performance figures the i7 870 is able to compete
easily with a i7 920 CPU thank to the enhanced Turbo-Mode. Single threaded
application profit quite massively from the enhanced Turbo-Mode. Therefore it
isn't a surprise that especially in Super Pi and Pov Ray the i7 870 CPU comes
dangerously close to a i7 965 CPU. Not only the theoretical benchmarks profit
because of the better Turbo-Mode also the multithreaded applications get a nice
performance benefit from the up to 666 MHz faster clock speeds.
One small weakness of the Lynnfield CPU seem to be recent games at high
resolutions and high detail level. Therefore we were able to see performance
drops in Streetfighter 4 and Resident Evil by up to 24 percent.
The best
thing about the new Lynnfield CPUs is the massively lower power consumption
compared to the Bloomfield models. If a system with an i5 750 CPU is in idle it
draws 35 percent less wattage than an setup which is basend on a i7 920 CPU.
Even under load the savings are about 25 percent.
If you're looking for a CPU which has a very wide area of
application field and comes with a sensible price tag Lynnfield should be just
perfect. Therefore it doesnt matter if you'd like to assemble an up-to-date
gaming system or a file server.
