Today is a special day, since we're going to have a look at the Rough Cut 2 x 4 shotgun from Nerf, which means that I'm finally capable of defending my workplace against intruders (girl friend). Apparently I'm going to have a close look this fun little toy and explain why I had to take these drastic measures in order to establish a safe environment again.

You might want to know why in the name of ... we're reviewing a Nerf Gun on ocaholic. Well, it's my girl friends fault! One beautiful day she came up with the glorious idea to buy a Nerf Rebelle crossbow. Apparently, from that day on I had to live in fear an terror nerver knowing when she's going to launch the next attack. In order to restore the proper balance in our household (laughing out terribly loud while writing this) and to finally be able to close an eye again during the night, I decided to gear up and get my hands on a Nerf N-Strike Elite Rough Cut 2 x 4 shotgun. Miraculously this really helped in restoring piece in the universe and I was finally able to seek retaliation for all those surprise attacks.

Like with every review we first have a look at the outside of the product before we open it up and checks what's happening on the inside. First of all the design. Nerf decided to choose a flashy combination of dark grey, white and orange. This will make it a bit tricky for you if you plan on becoming one with your environment, camouflaging from your toes to your head in order to launch a mean little surprise attack on your opponent (girl friend). Since the orange is rather well visible other tactics are more likely to end in a successful attack. We would recommend charging into the battlefieled like this is not going to be a tomrrow and fire everything you have as fast as possible to then run for your life. This way you might at least score a partial success.

What comes in very handy are the different firing modes. You have the possibility to work your opponent (girl friend) using single-fire (pull trigger halfway to fire one dart), double-shot (pull the rest of the way to fire second dart) or Slam Fire mode (hold trigger down and move handle rapidly back and forward). In the event of a sneak-attack we can highly recommend Slam Fire mode, which will allow you to fire the darts the fastest. If the mean approach doesn't work or if you simply want to scare your cat, which is climbing up the curtains for the 57th time, the double-shot is rather effective as well.

If you decide on buying a tactical device like a Nerf Gun, you'd prefer it to be a reliable product of high quality. The worst possible thing to happen would be a malfunction in time of desperate need. A quick look at the caseing reveals that Rough Cut 2 x 4 is made from solid plastic. There are two halfs and inbetween there is the loading as well as the firing mechnism. Both panels are kept together using an extensive number of screws, which add to a solid feel. At the bottom of the handle as well as on top of it there are places where you can attach a strap and on top of the barrel there is a tactical rail to attach accessory.

On the inside there is solid mechanics which has been very well lubricated. The parts here are made from plastic as well, which means that under certain circumstances you might have to restrain yourself, not pulling the the slam fire handle back like a maniac. This will definitely increase the lifespan. According to Nerf the Rough Cut 2 x 4 can shoot darts over a distance of up to 20 meters. During our tests we managed almost 15 meters. The gun uses a mechanism, which generates additional air pressure in order to fire the darts. There are two springs in place which push two cylinders air to the loading tubes. Since the two tubes at the top are the closest to the cylinder there is the highest pressure, which makes these darts fly the furthest. In the case of the bottom tubes it's possible that only one dart is going to be fired at a time, thus suggesting that the air pressure isn't high enough.

Conclusion

The Rough Cut 2 x 4 from Nerf is a lot of fun and provides protection and firepower against overconfident girl friends, who just so happen to equip themselves with Nerf Rebell crossbows. Apparently the owner of a Rough Cut 2 x 4 should be aware of the responsibility, which comes with advanced firepower. We would expressly warn you not to excessively use this device against your girl friend. The consequences can be severe, whereas the scale goes from having a fun time to a serious relationshiop crisis.

Using the Rough Cut 2 x 4 we noticed that the loading mechanism works very well. Nevertheless it's not flawless, since there is not always enough air pressure to fire both darts in the bottom tubes at the same time. As we already mentioned the air has to travel the furthest to these to tubes, which has a pressure loss as a result. Although we weren't able to fire darts 20 meters we still think it's a lot of fun that they can hit things, which are as far as 15 meters away from you.

The Rough Cut 2 x 4 is litterally a foutain of fun, while shooting darts reliably. Whether your 8 or 88 years, Nerf guns are a lot of fun and you might share lots of laughs with your friends. Apart from that this particular model is well made and works reliably.
The Nerf Rough Cut 2 x 4 receives 4 out of 5 stars.
