Silverstone Sugo SG13 Review
Category : Cases
Published by Luca Rocchi on 06.03.15
The Sugo SG13 from Silverstone appears to be a rather interesting mini-ITX case. Despite the small size it offers plenty of space, which means you can install mid-range graphics cards as well as standard ATX power supplies. Therefore this small cube is perfectly suitable for HTPC builds and apart from that you could even create a very small LAN party rig.

Bundle

Overview

The Silverstone SG13Q's bundle is simple and pretty straight-forward. The actual box is made out of cardboard with all the basic information regarding the case printed on it. Inside, we find the case wrapped in a plastic bag, and safely placed between two big pieces of styrofoam. This kind of packaging will most likely be enough for the case to survive even for the roughest shipments. Along with the case itself, the bundle also includes an instruction manual, which is always helpful, as well as a few other things including a plastic bag with screws needed for assembly and some zip-ties.

Product overview

Overview

As we already mentioned the Silverstone SG13Q is a cube case designed for mini-ITX motherboards and therefore very compact systems. The front features a large black mesh, behind which a fan can be placed. Since this case is ultra compact there is no space for a 5.25'' drive. Unlike most cases, the SG13Q has a single large "U" shape panel which is kept in place with four standard screws. On the top and on both side panels there is a mesh that helps with the cooling of components. On this model, all the connections are located on the front bottom corner and it includes two USB3.0 ports and the classic 3.5mm audio jacks. Despite the small size of the SG13Q, there is enough space for an ATX power supply as well as a medium size graphics card (max. 267 millimeter).

Installation

Overview

To describe the interior layout of this case in a most simple way, one could say that there are basically two floors. In the bottom of the SG13Q you horizontally place the motherboard and there is a slot for a 120/140 millimeter fan directly at the back of the case blowing in fresh air. On top of the motherboard you find space for a standard ATX power supply with the fan facing outside of the case. As far as the storage is concerned, you can equip the SG13Q with one 3.5" HDD or alternatively various combinations with 2.5" devices. HDDs are positioned on slides which are attached to the bottom side and the top of the case. Despite its very small dimensions of 222 x 181 x 285 mm, the SG13Q is offers space for a wide range of graphics cards as well as a medium-sized ATX power supplie. For our system, we used a fully modular and sleeved 550W ATX PSU, which was probably not the best solution but despite this, we were able to realize a neat cable management as well and on top of that we didn't have any trouble assembling the system. Unfortunately, due to the size of the case it's necessary to use a low profile CPU cooler with a maximum height of 61 millimeters. Alternatively you can also install an all-in-one watercooler. The assembly has proven to be easier than expected, especially thanks to the numerous cut outs that make things more accessible.

Ventilation options

Overview

Regarding the ventilation there is nothing much to say: the Silverstone SG13Q offers only one front slot where you can install a 120 or 140mm fan. In order to provide decent airflow Silverstone is using mesh panels on every side of the case. Like we said there is a 120/140mm fan spot on the front but in this place you can also install a radiatior for a watercooling setup.

Conclusion

General   + -
The Silverstone SG13Q really impressed us. Despite its small size and a rather low price, this case offers plenty of space even for entry-level or mid-range gaming systems which are equipped with either mini-ITX video cards such as the GTX960 or the R9 285. In addition, the SG13Q is compatible with medium sized ATX power supplies, which is always a bonus on such small cases. The build quality is on a good level and we couldn't find any particular problems while installing components. Like any very small case you're bound to use a low profile CPU cooler. Nevertheless, what's great is the fact, that there is also space for an all-in-one watercooler with 120/140 millimeter radiator.

-Price - Internal space - Build quality - ATX PSU

-No pre-installed fan
-No tool-less

Manufacturing quality / Ergonomics   + -
SG13Q is made of black painted, high quality steel. The bulkhead, with "U" shape, is rather light but we couldn't find any sharp edges or sluggish finish. The mounting process was easy and very simple, so we have not found anything to report and there is also a lot of space to work with components. We particularly enjoyed the internal layout regarding the storage devices since the SG13Q allows you to install one 3.5" HDD and one  2.5" drive.

- High quality materials - HDDs space

Design / Layout   + -
The design is clean and simple, and the lines of the Silverstone SG13Q are timeless. This is a very well though case and therefore it's also great on the inside. The only thing, which was really surprising is, the fact, that there was no fan in the delivery. On the other hand, related to cooling, we were able to install an all-in-one watercooler, which is just great.   - Design
- ATX PSU
- Space for medium size GPU

Recommendation   + -
If you are looking for an ITX cube case with a clean and elegant design then Silverstone SG13Q is definitely the case to consider. Apart from that this case is also able to convince from a build quality point of view. For 47 Euro you can get a very compact case, which allows you to build HTPCs or even small gaming rigs.
