Conclusion

Lets take a closer look at the results in the games we tested. In this case we can see, that the R9 280X is a little bit slower than the GTX 680. On average the performance difference is 0.61 percent in favor of the GTX 680. A closer look at the test results shows, there quite big differences depending on the games tested. In case of DIRT Showdown we see that the R9 280X is 14 percent quicker than the GTX 680 whereas in Crysis 3 the GTX 680 pulls away by no less than 26 percent.

A large portion of our readers might be aware of the fact, that the Radeon R9 280X is basically a rebrand of the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. If you keep in mind that the GTX 680 and the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition have been direct competitors back in the days and they even occupied the same price range, then it becomes rather obvious why the R9 280X and the GTX 680 are equally quick, although there are big differences from game to game.

Should you actually really be thinking about upgrading from a GTX 680 to a Radeon R9 280X than we can tell you that you won't get better performance from the card you're planning to buy. Therefore it makes sense to stick with the GTX 680 or go with a card that is actually offering additional performance compared to the GTX 680. The only possible reason we see why someone could be willing to take this step is to get support for AMDs new Mantle API, but at the same time you will be ditching PhysiX support. In our opinion such a descision would be of really subjective nature.
