Category : PSUs
Published by Marc Büchel on 20.12.13
With their Fatal1ty 750W, OCZ have a rather aggressively priced power supply in their portfolio. For as little as 75 Euro you can get a unit, that features modular cable management, an illuimnated fan and up to 750 Watts of continuous power delivery next to an 80Plus Bronze certificate. This sound like quite a lot of hardware for this kind of money, doesn't it?

The OCZ Fatal1ty 750W is packed in a rather simple box, which is pretty much what you get with most, if not all, PSUs in this price range. It shows all the usual specifications and features while providing enough protection to the PSU wrapped inside the plastic and additionally protected by a second cardboard box.

The OCZ Fatal1ty 750W comes bundled with a manual, standard power cord as well as four screws to secure it to the case.

The OCZ Fatal1ty 750W uses a black painted case with standard 150 x 180 x 85 millimeter dimensions and bottom mounted fan placed behind the fan grill with red lighting. The fan behind the grill measures 135mm and features a double ball-bearing and thermal control, offering good compromise between proper cooling and quiet performance.

Delivery and Specifications

The OCZ Fatal1ty 750W is a fully modular PSU.

Cables

Cable Length
1 x ATX 20+4 pin 60  cm
2 x EPS/ATX 12V (4+4) pin 60 cm
2 x PCI-E 6+2 + 6+2 pin 60, 60 cm
1 x 1x Floppy 15 cm
2 x 4x SATA 40, 55, 70, 85 cm
2 x 3x Molex 40, 55, 70 cm

Connectivity is decent for the PSU of this class as it offers four PCI-Express 6+2 power connectors on two separate cables, eight SATA and six Molex connectors, enough for most mid- to higher-end setups. The cables are the 18 AWG. High-end PSUs normally use better 16AWG or even better cables.

Specifications

Voltage Current Power
+ 3.3 V 25 A 150 Watt 750 Watt (Total)
+ 5.0 V 25 A
+ 12 V 62.5 A 750 Watt
- 12 V 0.3 A 3.6 Watt
+ 5 Vsb 3.0 A 15 Watt

The OCZ Fatal1ty 750W has been 80Plus Bronze certified. This means, that the efficiency of this PSU should be above 82% at 20% load, above 85% at 50% load and above 82% at 100% load.

As you can see from the list below, the rest of the features include standard protections, standard dimensions and a 3-year warranty that is pretty much in line with most mid-range PSUs from various other manufacturers while high-end PSUs usually come with 5-year warranty.

A Look Inside

With their Fatal1ty 750W, OCZ have created a power supply, that features a single rail design. Other than that the manufacturer succeeded in provided their Fatal1ty 750W unit with surprisingly tidy internals, although the sheer number of components used is rather high. There are quite large aluminium profiles taking care of adequated cooling. A closer look at the APFC capacitor shows, that OCZ decided to euip this PSU with a one from Nippon Chemi Con and it features 470uF at 105°C.
Since this is a fully modular power supply, OCZ hat to provide this unit with a daughter PCB, where there are the connectors for the cables. Other manufacturers usually use the additional space on the daughter PCB to install an armada of additional filter cap. In case of this unit there are four additional caps. It is also a good sign that OCZ decided to use rather thick wire to transport most of the power.

Result Analysis and Discussion

Efficiency 115V

Load Pin(W) Pout(W) Efficiency
20 % 180.29 153.20 84.98 %
50 % 439.30 381.59 86.86 %
100 % 900.60 753.79 83.70 %

The 80Plus Bronze certification requirements (82% - 85% - 82%) are surpassed especially at 20% load. This is the case with most of PSU's that you can buy today and it mainly originates from the reason of lower losses in the AC filtering stage and the PFC at 230V AC.

Output Stability

Load Rail Loading(A) Output(V)
20 % 5V 3.30 5.05
3.3V 3.27 3.32
12V 11.54 12.10
5VSB 1.00 5.08

50 % 5V 7.53 5.03
3.3V 7.53 3.26
12V 23.07 12.05
5VSB 1.54 5.03

100 % 5V 15.05 4.92
3.3V 15.01 3.21
12V 50.01 11.94
5VSB 3.00 4.96

The stability of the output voltages and the outcome of the crossload tests (results not shown here) are not perfect but still within the margin and the norms, so they are absolutely satisfactory.

Noise

20 % Silent
50 % Audible
100 % Audible

Overall noise level results are decent and mostly attributed to be PC Power and Cooling's / OCZ's choice to use its own high-quality thermally controlled 135mm fan with rifle bearing.

12V 0.049

Conclusion

With the Fatal1ty 750W, OCZ has a rather solid power supply in their portfolio which is suitable for the upper entry level market. For as little as 75 Euro they offer a power supply, that features 80Plus Bronze certification and therefore offers up to 85 percent efficiency. Other than that there is a fan of decent quality with red illumination and especially people who tend to like have some catchy color inside their system, will enjoy this little feature. On another note, OCZ decided to equip this power supply with japanese capacitors, which is anything but standard with 750 Watts PSU in this price range. Other than that this unit is fully modular, which is also a great feature considering its price.

Overall you get a decent feature mix for as little as 75 Euro. If you're about to buy a new PSU and it shouldn't be more than 75 Euro but still be capable of coping with quite some power hungry hardware, then this unit is no bad choice.

The OCZ Fatal1ty 750W gets 4 out of 5 stars.
