Layout and I/O
The ASUS Rampage II Gene presents itself on a black and brown six layer PCB. A stable current supply you get via the 8 + 2 phases power design (eight phases for the CPU, two phases for QPI/DRAM, northbridge and memory).
Graphic cards can be mounted into two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots (1) which support SLI as well as CrossFireX and further you'll find an eight channel X-FI sound chip onboard.
Altogether there are six memory slots on the ASUS mainboard which officially supports DDR3-1066/1333 with up to 12 GByte/s transferrate. If you want to overclock the memory subsystem ASUS claims DDR3-2000, 1800, 1600 is also possible.
North- and southbridge as well as voltage converters are hold at adequate temperatures via a passiv Heatpipe (4) cooling solution. Fortunately there is still enough space around the CPU socket to install even todays biggest air coolers.
With its 90 degree angled SATA connectors ASUS lets the you arrange its cables neatly (1) and the onboard power- and reset button are very practical (2).
If you are looking for external connectors on the Rampage II Gene mainboard you can find one Gigabit ethernet ports, six USB 2.0 connectors, one Firewire, one eSATA, PS/2 keyboard and mouse connector, optical S/PDIF connectors and 8-channel audio I/O.
