Conclusion

General   + -
At a first glance the Z830 looks like a very nice device. But as soon as you take it into your hands you'll feel that the magnesium aluminium alloy is very thin and starts to bend quickly. Especially with the cover lid it's the bending angles are almost frightening. Furthermore there is the keyboard and the touchpad with the very short keydrop. One millemeter keydrop more would have helped a lot in this case. With its 1'110 gramms the Z830 is the lightest Ultrabook on the market but unfortunately this comes at quite a cost.   - Design

Display / Input devices   + -
Toshiba equipped its 13.3 inch Ultrabook with a display that definitely isn't above average. Although the TN panel offers good brightness to use the device outside when the sun is shining the viewing angles with 45 degrees horizontally and 10 degrees vertically are bad. Luckily there is a matte display but the you see that the contrast ratio is bad a again and black is more of a dark grey than black
Another thing that could be improved concerns the keyboard. There is such a short key drop that it feels irritating to use it. Typing really isn't comfortable. Furthermore there is the same issue with the touchpads left and right key. You need way too much force until they release, which is a pity. Luckily the touchpad is precise.

Performance / Battery Life   + -
Equipped with a Core i5-2467M dual core CPU that has four threads, clocked at 1.6 GHz and Intels integrated graphics chip, the Z830 isn't the fastest notebook we've ever tested. But that's also not what it's been built for. Thanks to a quick SSD it feels very responsive.
A closer look at battery life shows that the Z830 really has some stamina. It take more than four hours and thirty minutes until the device is going to shut down when you browse the web via using the integrated WiFi module.

Recommendation   + -
If you should be looking for the lightest of all Ultrabooks then you'll have to look at the Z830. If you're really interested in this device we recommend that you try the keyboard and touchpad to see wether you like it or not.   - Ultra portable

Rating
We give the Z830 from Toshiba sufficient three out of five stars.
