The G1.Assassin 2 is Gigabytes interpretation of an Intel X79 based gaming motherboard. The two things you'll notice first are the coolers which look like guns. This really is a matter of taste and you'll either love it or hate it. Furhtermore there are green expansion slots and enough SATA ports to attach hard drives. On the back panel you get two USB 3.0 ports which isn't that much in fact. At least there is the possibility to route another two USB 3.0 ports to the front of the computer. Really convincing, that's what the delivery was. For example we like, that the additional wireless card comes with two separate antenna for ideal connectivity.   - Layout

Layout   + -

Generally the Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2s Layout has been well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors. Unfortunately there are no power- and reset-buttons. Furhtermore there is also no debug display which might be very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Totally you find three PCI Express x16 slots, which have been very well positioned. Below each of the first two slots there is a PCI Express x1 slot and below the third full size PCI Express slot there is a standard PCI expansion slot. Like this you can install up to three dual slot graphics cards without rendering any of the connectors at the bottom edge of the board useless.

  - Angled SATA connectors
- Space around the CPU socket
- Positioning of the PCI-Express-x16-Slots
- Area between CPU socket and I/O panel
- No Power and Reset Buttons
- No Debug LED

Performance   + -
In our overall rankings the Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2 has been able to score well both, our 2D as wells as our 3D Benchmarks. It has been able to convince us in 3D Mark Vantage, SiSoft Sandra, wPrime and Crysis. In all these benchmarks this Gigabyte gaming motherboard got a top position. Only in PC Mark 7 the overall performance was lacking behind the top boards. Generally the G1.Assassin 2 is a solid performer.   - 3D Mark Vantage
- SiSoft Sandra
- wPrime
- Crysis
 - PC Mark 7

Power Consumption   + -
When it comes to idle power consumption the G1.Assassin 2 shares the last spot the Rampage IV Extreme from ASUS. If this wasn't enough under load the power comsumption becomes really bad. The Rampage IV Extreme needed 246 Watts in test system which was the worst value until today. The Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2 gaming motherboard needed a whopping 285 Watts. Therefore we're really asking ourselves what Gigabyte put onto this board, that needs this much power.     - Idle Power Consumption
- Load Power Consumption

Recommendation   + -
If you're going to build a PC based on Intels latest high end desktop processors and you do like coolers with a weapon design, then you'll get a well performing motherboard which needs a lot of power especially under load conditions. The Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2 is available in Switzerland for about CHF 370.- (est. EUR 308.-).   - Gaming PC
