Despite the circumstance that the rating of a product is based on as many
objective facts as possible there are factors which can have an influence on a
rating after publication. Every autor may perceive data differently over time
whereas one possible reason for example is a deeper background knowledge or
understanding of certain processes. Certain unforseen market conditions as well
as changes have the potential to render a descision made at a certain point in

With the Octane, OCZ has an SSD in its portfolio that comes with
quite a competitive price performance ratio. Especially the SATA-II version,
which hasn't been tested here, comes with a very affordable price tag. At the end of the day
you get 31'000 IOPS when doing 4k reads and 20'000 IOPS when performing 4k
writes. Therefore the Octane with 512 Gigabyte is quite an ok performing SSD.
A closer look at the sequential thoughput rates reveals that therer is robust performance level especially at higher block sizes. Regarding sequential reads we se a maximum value of 468 Megabyte per second. Concerning sequential writes the drive tops out at 308 Megabyte per seconds. If you keep in mind, that the new Indilinx controller doens't care about compression, then one could even think about using this drive as a very well performing storage drive instead of a quick system disk.
Last but not least there is the price: the 512 Gigabyte SATA-III OCZ Octane costs
about CHF 790.- (est EUR 658.-). The SATA-II version of this drive only costs
CHF 570.- (est. EUR 475.-).The fact that you also get a good bundle with
this drive, really makes it worth its price.
The OCZ Octane with 512 Gigabyte receives four out of five
stars.
