Review: ASUS GeForce GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II Top

Step by step nVidia is launching its Kepler GK104 line-up. First there was the GTX 680, then the 670 and now there is the GTX 660 Ti which is in fact a GTX 670 with a memory bandwidth of 192 Bit instead of 256 Bit. In this review we are going to test not only the performance of the GTX 660 Ti but also the custom version from ASUS, the GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II Top that features a factory overclocking of +157 MHz, a custom PCB design and a DirectCU II v2 cooler. The manufacturer itself claims that this graphics card is kickass and well, we will see!

Technical data / specifications

With the ASUS GeForce GTX 660 Ti DirectCu II Top you get a factory overclocked card with a custom PCB deisgn as well as a DirectCU II v2 cooler. The manufacturer claims that this baby is 7 % faster than the reference design, 20 % cooler and 5 times quieter. Thanks to the factory overclocking, binned GPU, custom cooler and reworked PCB design we can kind of believe that.

Looking at clock speeds we see that the GPU runs at 1'059 MHz standard with a minimum boost clock of 1'137 MHz. While the stock designed GTX 660 Ti runs at 915 MHz with a boost of 980 MHz. Plus our sample was clocking itself up to 1'176 MHz which is 3x 13 MHz more than the specs. No overclocking was made regarding the GDDR5 memory that follows nVidia's recommendation with a clock speed of 1'500 MHz (6'000 MHz effective).Wich results in 144.2 GB/s of memory bandwidth with the bus width of 192 Bit.

The GPU itself consists of 3.54 billion transistors. It is the same GPU you find on the GTX 670 graphics card but with a smaller memory bus (192 Bit against 256 Bit on the GTX 670) and less ROPs (24 against 32). For the record the GTX 660 Ti is also clocked like the GTX 670 for both GPU and memory.

Now looking at the phycsical specifications of the DirectCU II Top version as said before ASUS reworked the PCB, binned the core and used their own GPU cooler. The DCU II Top gets 6 digital power phases and 9 POSCAP while the reference GTX 660 Ti has only 4 analog phases and 2 POSCAP. You also find a lot of ASUS technology that helps to improve overclocking, power efficiency, noise reduction (less EMI), lifespan and so on. You also find the DirectCU II cooler v2 (the v1 was crap if you ask me) which I literally love that features two 80mm fans with 11 blades each, three 6mm heatpipes and a red/black design. I was too lazy to count the fins and calculate the dissipation surface/power but trust me, it's big. So in other words to stay simple this graphics card is: Better, faster  and stronger.

Delivery

   


The delivery is reduced to the strict minimum therefore you will find only a manual, one power adapter, a DVI to VGA adapter and of course the graphics card itself that's all. One comment about the box though, what the hell is that? I hope it is not the final package. Though the graphics card is well attached this thing is ugly and not handy at all, where is my lovely ASUS graphics card box like it used to be?

Conclusion

We don't know about the graphics cards from the other manufacturers as we don't have them on hand but we have to say that this one from ASUS is a strong one, almost perfect. We mean that thanks to the factory overclocking of no less than +157 MHz it gives the DirectCU II Top a nice boost in performance. Plus the card features an ASUSmade PCB design with a lot of cool features like more phases, a digital power design and so on. Everything cooled by the cooler I like the most named DirectCU II v2 that one we introduced in the specifications page. It is noiseless in 2D mode and impressively silent in 3D load just like it was on the GTX 670 DirectCU II Top, almost noiseless.   - Noiseless in 2D - Almost noiseless in load 3D - PCB Design

Thanks to his high factory overclocking, the GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II Top was on average 7 % faster than the reference GTX 660 Ti in the games we tested. Not enough to reach the performance of the reference GTX 670 but this is due to the weaker bus width of 192 against 256 Bit. Meanwhile the GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II Top was only 5 % far from the GTX 670 under the games we tested here in average. And this performance has been achieved with a power consumption max of only 202 Watts for the whole setup measured under heavy 3D Load (FureMark) which is very energy efficeint according to the performance offered.   - Performance
