Prolimatech is well known for their rather big aircoolers. The Megahalems Super Mega is no exception in this concern and equipped with a few copper fins this cooler might even offer a certain extra in performance. We're already curious to see how this thing will perform during the benchmarks.

The Prolimatech Megahalems Super Mega comes well protected from outer influences, that none of the parts included will be damaged during transportation. The delivery includes a mounting kit which is compatible only to Intel sockets. Unfortunately you can't use this cooler on an AMD CPU. Furthermore there is also no fan in the delivery. Prolimatech wants to let the user choose which fan the want to use with the Megahalems Super Mega. Included in delivery you find bracket to fit to fans to the cooler. Like this cooling capacity can be improved by using a "push and pull" effect.

Construction and design

Construction

The Prolimatech Megahalems Super Mega mainly consists of aluminium and copper. You can find a base plate which leads the dissipation power to the six heatpipes which all have a diameter of six millimeters. Altogether there are 45 fins soldered to the heatpipes. Furthremore there are four stacks of copper fins. Two of them can be found on each side of the cooler. In order to achieve highest cooling capacity the fins have been located where the fan creates the highest airflow.




Design

We did not see any manufacturing mistakes on our sample, and it seems that it has been very well made which means that manufacturing is on an excellen level. The heatpipes do have indentical bending radius, which results in less vortex. Furhtermore this cooler comes with a total of 45 fins. Prolimatech has chosen to arrange them as "twin towers" where there is a fin stack on each side of the heatpipes. The fins themselves have been connected to one and another to improve stability and generate an optimized airflow.

Mounting

The mounting kit is only ompatible with Intel sockets. Included in delivery you find a backplate. Once in position on the backside of the motherboard you can put it in place using four thumb screws and two massive aluminium bars. After you've done this place the cooler on the CPU and get the third aluminium bar. This one goes below the two cooling towers and above the base plate. Now you'll have to tighten the screws on the aluminium bar which takes quite a substantial amount of force. The advantage of this much pressure is increased heat conductivity.

As we can see on the pictures, taken on a ASUS board with the Prolimatech Megahalems Super Mega mounted, the first DIMM slot is still usable and you can even fit on it Kingston HyperX modules, which are well known for their huge heatspreaders. There even is plenty of space to install a second fan on the backside of the cooler.

Testroutine

The CPU is being evaluated using Real Temp and with Prime95 we reach nearly 100% load on the CPU. For measuring the noise level we use a Voltcraft SL-200 decibel meter, which is positioned one meter from the CPU cooler with the fan mounted.

Conclusion

General   + -
With the Megahalems Super Mega, Prolimatech has a CPU cooler in its portfolio that offers excellent performance. On the other hand this cooler is everything but cheap and also the weight is immensely high because Prolimatech decided to provide the cooler with aluminium fins. In fact the Megahalems Super Mega weights almost one kilgramm. Another point that caught our attention immediately was the build quality, which is also on an excellent level. It doesn't matter from which angle you look at this cooler from every perspective it looks brilliant.   - PWM fan &Push[/fr]  
       
Installation   + -
The installation process is quite easy and you can mount the cooler quickly. Unfortunately there is no AMD mounting kit included in the delivery which makes this an "Intel-only" product (which really is a sad thing). Furthermore there is the very high pressure on the CPU and the fact that it takes quite a substantial amount of force to put the cooler in place. Novices will be constantly worried whether their going to break something or not, when tightening the screws. But the high pressure also has an advantage: it helps to increase cooling capacity even further.   - Easy and robust - Springs - Only compatible with Intel sockets, no AMD
       
Performance   + -

During our tests we used two 120 millimeter fans from Noctua which when driven at 12 Volt produce a noise level that is well audible. Using an adapter and regulating the voltage to 7 Volt made the noise level drop to subjectively silent. The performance of this cooler is just excellent. In both our tests it managed to achieve the first place in our comparison tables.

If you're looking for an absolute high-end aircooler, then the Megahalems Super Mega from Prolimatech is what you're looking for. Never the less you shouldn't expect this thing to be cheap, especially not if you want to equip it with two fans.
