With the Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC (Super Overclock) we have a graphics card in our testlab which doesn't belong to the latest models but it still is quite an interesting product. The fact that this card comes with a highly efficient cooler and a huge overclocking potential makes it particularly interesting.
We'd like to thank Gigabyte for providing us with the testsample.

Technical data / specifications

With the GTX 460 SOC (Super Overclock) Gigabyte has GTX 460 in its portfolio which has been highly modified. Therefore they equipped this card with a brand new seven phase power design that is able to allow good overclocking potential. Gigabyte itself overclocks the card by 140 MHz as a factory default, resulting in a GPU clock of no less then 815 MHz. Also the memory clocks have been tweaked and the GTX 460 SOC now features 4'000 MHz on the memory.
The Taiwanese company also overworked the cooler which is still a dual-slot version but much more powerful thatn the standard design. Even under load it is able to keep the temperatures low and also the nois level, especially under idle condition, is very low.

Overclocking

For our overclocking tests we used MSI Afterburner. The reason that we didn't use Gigabytes own "OC Guru" is, that we haven been able to set the maximum voltage in the program. It always reset to a lower level which in the end wasn't enough for our overclockings. Using the MSI Afterburner software it's been possible to set the voltage to 1.088 Volt and reach 951 MHz GPU clock an 4'300 MHz memory clock.

3DMark 11 is Futuremarks latest benchmark for the entire graphical subsystem. The benchmark uses DirectX 11 and it supports all recent features which can possibly generate high load on a GPU. Therefore you find tessellation, compute shader calculations, divers lighting effects and different depth of filed animations. Following we publish values regarding the performance preset of 3DMark 11.

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX9 as well as the DirectX10 benchmark we can again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

Conclusion

General   + -
Despit the fact that the GTX 460 SOC isn't the latest regarding video cards this particular model still performs decent. Especially if you take into account that it is a midrange card. What makes this card quite handful is the fact that it come with a huge factory overclocking and still has a lot of overclocking potential.   - 2D/3D silent  
       
Performance   + -
Regarding the performance this card is able to compete with a Radeon HD 6850. If you then look at the price you can see that the GTX 460 SOC still is a highly competitive mid-range video card.      
       
Overclocking   + -
The overclocking software which was included in the bundle didn't convince us. In our tests it wasn't possible to set the voltage to the maximum using the "OC Guru" Software. As soon as we installed MSI Afterburner we were able to set the voltage to 1.088 Volt and reach a GPU frequency of 951 MHz and 4'300 MHz memory clock speed.   - Overclocking GPU 951 MHz / Mem 4'300 MHz

If you should be looking for a mid-range graphics card that comes with a unique board layout and design then the Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC will be a perfect match for you.   - Mid-Range Gaming
