Conclusion

General   + -
The ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha from ASUS is a product, that is close to perfection. The expectations towards a new flagship motherboard from ASUS are high but in the case of this board the vendor didn't fail. There is simply an armada of features and extreme overclockers will be happy as well. Usually when ASUS is launching a new high-end motherboard you can be rather sure, that it's going to be by far the most expensive board when compared to the competition. Well, with this board that's precisely the case. ASUS is asking 607 Euro for this board, which is really a lot. Nevertheless the RGB lighting in combination with the mostly black design make this board look beautiful all the time.   - Design

- OLED LCD

Layout   + -
Basically the ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha's layout has been very well structured and it's difficult to squeeze more features. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Apart from that there is also a safe boot as well as a retry onboard. Both these buttons will be useful if you choose to overclock or even extreme overclock your system.

On the motherboard there is a total of four full sized PCI Express slots and all of them support PCIe Gen 3.0. Furthermore there is the DIMM.2 slot where you can install up to two M.2 SSDs.

- USB ports
- OC buttons
- Fan Extension Card II

Power design   + -
A closer look at the power design reveals that the solution ASUS used on this board is overkill for most of the users around. The motherboard feature sixteen power stages spread over eight phases. The power stages used on this model are the IR3555 which have been specified at 60A. In general ASUS is using very high-end components for the power design and the so called micro-fine alloy chokes make no exception. Furthermore there are 10K polymer and tantalum capacitors taking care of output filtering.

The heatsinks of today’s motherboards, especially when it comes to the high-end motherboards, greatly add to the overall looks of a product. On the ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha, the heatsinks are solid, heavy and able to cool down all the components. Last but not least, ASUS has placed two tiny fans that cool down the VRM area.
  - Solid VRM design
- Good VRM temperatures

Performance   + -
At the moment our test setup includes two motherboards and during the upcoming weeks we will add test results of more models. Calculating the average of all benchmarks results we ran, we see that this board scores first but the gap between the second place and last one is very tiny.

A closer look at the performance of the ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha shows, that this board is 4% faster in 3DMark Time Spy CPU Test and in a couple of benchmark of Sisoft Sandra. On another note we had a look at power consumption and in this case we clearly see that we have a board here that has been equipped with many additional chips, which in the end means, that power consumption is high and energy efficiency is not its strength.

Recommendation   + -
Should you be looking for a high-end overclocking motherboard, then the ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha is simply a great choice. Obviously you should have the necessary cash, since this board is no bargain.   - Overclocking

Rating
We give the ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha excellent 4 out of 5 stars.
