General   + -
A closer look at the motherboard lineup from ASRock reveals that the X399 Phantom Gaming 6 is a mid-range model, regarding their gaming branded X399 based products. Therefore it comes with a bunch of really neat features, like for example several USB 3.1 ports, Polychrome RGB Lighting and M.2 slots as well as a great looking design. At the moment this is one of the cheapest AMD X399 motherboard around. On Geizhals the X399 Phantom Gaming 6 costs 246 Euro.   - Design

Layout   + -
The layout of the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 has been well thought - as expected. Storage wise we find eight SATA ports placed in the bottom right corner and M.2 slots placed between the PCI-Express slots. Apart from that there are three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots with metal reinforcements. Furthermore there are plenty of 4-pin PWM headers for both aircooling and watercooling setups. A quick look at the back I/O panel reveals there are plenty of USB ports, which in combination with the display and network connectors make for a good mix on the connector side of things.

Power design   + -
On the X399 Phantom Gaming 6 we find 6 + 2 phase power design. While 6 phases are responsible for the CPU vCore, 2 phases are responsible for CPU SoC power part. This motherboard is compatible with up to 180W TDP processors, however we haven't found any issue with our 2990WX. On the VCC side there is a Intersil ISL69147 controller and on the SoC VCC side we spot a Intersil ISL69144 PWM controller. Overall the VRM design is certainly good enough for a wide variety of users.   - No issue with 2990WX - Compatible with 180W CPUs
- High VRM temperature (with 2990WX)
Performance   + -
At the moment our test setup includes two motherboards and during the upcoming weeks we will add test results of more models. Calculating the average of all benchmarks results we ran, we see that this board scores last but the gap between the first place and last one is very tiny. Furthermore we have to mention that the X399 Phantom Gaming 6 isn't officially compatible with our CPU due to the high TDP. We haven't found any stability issue, temperature were fine and everything was pretty smooth.   - Power consumption
Recommendation   + -
The X399 Phantom Gaming 6 is a well equipped X399 motherboard. If you are looking for a motherboard for yours Ryzen Threadripper 2920X or 2950X, X399 Phantom Gaming 6 can be a solid choice. On top of that the price of 250 Euro is reasonable and competitive.
We give the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 excellent 4 out of 5 stars.
