Générale   + -
A closer look at the motherboard lineup from ASUS reveals that the Maximus XI Gene is a high-end model, regarding their gaming branded Z390 based products. Therefore it comes with a bunch of really neat features, like for example ASUS's SupremeFX audio solution, Aura RGB Lightning and two M.2 slots as well as a great looking design. Nevertheless at a price of 340 Euro, this board is definitely no bargain.   - Design

Layout   + -
The layout of the ASUS Maximus XI Gene has been well thought - as expected. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons and the debug LED. Apart from that there is only one PCIe 3.0 x16 slot paired with one PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. This means that you can't create multi GPU setups. When it comes to the M.2 slots we like the appropriately sized M.2 heatsink and the DIMM.2 slot. Furthermore there are plenty of 4-pin PWM headers for both aircooling and watercooling setups. A quick look at the back I/O panel reveals there are plenty of USB ports, which in combination with the display and network connectors make for a good connectivity mix.

Power design   + -
The power design is a bit of a disappointment. Due to the fact that there are twelve inductors visible one might assume that ASUS implementes something like a 10 + 2 or an 8 + 4 phase power design, but the reality is a 5 x 2 + 2 phase power design. Nevertheless it's based on ASUS's higher-end ASP1405I PWM controller regarding the VCC side. Furthermore there are ten Infineon IR3555 MOSFETs. Regarding the VCCGT section we see a similar design, ASUS has placed the same PWM controller and two MOSFETs.

Overall the VRM design is certainly good enough for a wide variety of users. Nevertheless keeping in mind this is a 340 Euro mATX motherboard we would have expected more.
Performance   + -
At the moment our test setup includes only three motherboards but during the upcoming we will add more models. Calculating the average of all benchmarks results we ran, we see that this board scores 2nd but it's very close to 1st place. Having a closer look reveals that the ASUS Maximus XI Gene is about 2% faster than the ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac in Sisoft Sandra - Arythmetics - Dhrystone benchmark. Checking out the 3D performance, we see a strong result for the ASUS motherboard in 3DMark Time Spy. On another note, we had a look at energy efficiency where this board scores 3rd.   - Sisoft Sandra - Arythmetics - Dhrystone
Recommandation   + -
The Maximus XI Gene is a well equipped Z390 motherboard. This board is also quick according to our 2D and 3D benchmarks. On top of that it comes with a vast feature set yet the price of 340 Euro excluding shipping costs is pretty steep.   - Price
We give the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Gene excellent 4 out of 5 stars.
