Published by Luca Rocchi on 16.01.19

With the B450 Tomahawk, MSI has a well equipped mid-range motherboard in its portfolio, which comes with a bunch of interesting features. There are for example three PCIe x1 slots, two PCIe 3.0 slots and one M.2 connector. Apart from that the Tomahawk features a gray color scheme with dark accents. At the moment this model is listed for 100 Euro on Geizhals.

General   + -
A closer look at the motherboard lineup from MSI reveals that the B450 Tomahawk is their mid-range model with ATX form factor. Therefore it comes with some really neat features, like for example RGB backlighting, several USB ports as well as a great looking design in general. Sure the B450 Tomahawk is a good motherboard with a solid price.   - Design
- Layout
Layout   + -
Overall, the B450 Tomahawk's layout has been well-thought. As we already mentioned on this review there is a total of six angled SATA ports. Furthermore we have one steel-reinforced PCI Express Gen3 x16. We liked the position of the CPU socket, which allows for installing large air coolers. A quick look at the back I/O panel reveals there are plenty of USB ports, which in combination with the display and network connectors make for a good connectivity mix.

- Space around the CPU socket

Performance   + -
At the moment our test setup includes only four motherboards but during next weeks we will add more models. Calculating the average of all benchmark results we ran, we see that this board scores 3rd. If we check a bit closer, we see that the B450 Tomahawk gets a good result regarding the power consumption. Anyway the average difference between these four boards is very tiny. Furthermore, speaking about 2D performance, we see good results from this tiny MSI motherboard regarding SuperPi 1M. Speaking about the power design, we see that MSI has put some attention in the CPU area. This includes the use of a Richtek RT8894A PWM controller running in 4+2 phase mode and ON Semiconductor MOSFETs. Overall we believe that the VRM design is good enough for the intended audience, especially when paired with the decent-sized heatsink.   - Power consumption
Recommendation   + -
The B450 Tomahawk is a well-equipped B450 motherboard. This board is also quick according to our 2D and 3D benchmarks we're running. On top of that it comes with a vast feature set and with a solid price of 99 Euro excluding shipping costs. If you are looking for a good AMD B450 ATX motherboard, the B450 Tomahawk from MSI might be a good choice.   - Price
We give the MSI B450 Tomahawk excellent 4 out of 5 stars.
