Cost effective after 64 layers and more

In the shape of a pilot project Western Digital, who recently bought out Toshiba’s NAND foundries, is starting to ramp up the production of 64 layer 3D NAND flash memory. The new generation of NAND flash memory chips goes by the name BiCS3 and should increase the storage density per chip from 256 Gbit to 512 Gbit.


Two new HGST Ultrastar disks

Although Western Digital is meanwhile also active in the SSD market, they’re going to launch two new high-capacity HDDs. Both models belong to the HGST Ultrastar series providing 12TB and 14TB of storage space. To provide an increased life-span, these drives are going to be pre-filled with helium.


Unveils WD Green and WD Blue SSDs

After completing its acquisition of SanDisk, Western Digital has now joined the consumer SSD market with two new SSD lines that are practically re-branded Sandisk SSD lineups, the WD Green SSD and WD Blue SSDs.


Aimed at datacenter servers

Western Digital has expanded its line of hard disk drives to include a completely new WD Gold Series of HDDs designed for small- to medium-scale enterprise servers and rack-mount datacent servers and storage enclosures.


Goes 16TB with two 8TB in RAID 0

Western Digital has announced that it has expanded its lineup of drives with new 8TB capacity HelioSeal drives for NAS, video surveillance and desktop external applications.


Getting proper SSD business

Western Digital has announced that it is going to acquire Sandisk for around US $19 billion. This move will finally make WD a worthy competition in the SSD market.


Posts good results

Depending on the company, the fiscal year does not align with the actual year and for Western Digital, its second fiscal quarter ended January 2, 2015, and today, the company announced its financial results.


4TB HDD with 64/128GB SSD

Western Digital does not hide its desire to slow down the SSD market and while they already had an SSHD on their catalog, the company showcased another prototype at the Storage Vision 2015 held on 4th and 5th of January, which is equipped with a 64 GB SSD and a 4 TB HDD.


Enterprise SSD company

Western Digital is definitely serious about the SSD market, at least the enterprise part of it, as it has now acquired yet another enterprise SSD company, Skyera.


With revenue of US $3.9 billion

Western Digital have announced its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2015, which ended on October 3rd, 2014, with revenue of US $3.9 billion and net income of US $423 million, or US $1.76 per share.


Especially made for videosurveillance

Western Digital has updated its line of HDDs meant for video surveillance applications with the new WD Purple 6TB HDD model.





External USB 3.0 drive for TVs

Western Digital has announced its newest My Passport AV-TV, an external USB 3.0-equipped HDD designed to simplify storage, playback as well as recording on TVs.


EOL from December 29th, 2013

Western Digital has had a few PATA drives in its portfolio for users which for example wanted to upgrade very old notebooks with a larger and quicker drive. Now the company announced, that they will stop shipping PATA drive by the end of December.

In the wake of Computex 2013, Western Digital has announced that it has started to ship the world's thinnest 1TB HDD, the 2.5-inch WD Blue 7mm. To be available in capacities from 320GB to 1TB, the new WD Blue 2.5-inch 7mm HDD is shipping to OEMs, channel integrators and consumers.


Travelstar 5K1500, 9.5mm, 1.5TB

HGTS, also known as the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies before it was taken over by Western Digital, has now announced the new highest capacity HDD for the mainstream mobile market, the 2.5-inch and 9.5mm thick, 1.5TB capacity, Travelstar 5K1500.
