Seagate starts shipping its new 6TB HDD

With 12Gb/s SAS or SATA 6Gbps interface

Seagate Technology has announced that it has started the worldwide shipping of the world's fastest enterprise grade 3.5-inch 6TB HDD, the Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD V4.


According to Seagate the new 3.5-inch HDD will provide fastest performance available for a "nearline" HDD thanks to Seagate's eight-generation platform which allows the HDD to deliver up to 25-performance compared to competing 6TB HDDs. Designed with storage market in mind, the new HDD is ideal fro 24x7 buld data storage and will be available in a 12Gb/s SAS or in a SATA 6Gb/s interface options. It also features multi-drive rotational vibration tolerance, 7200rpm performance, ramp load technology, a humidity sensor, the T10 and T13-compliant power management standards which allows users to adjust systems for optimal energy usage as well as best-in-class security Self-Encrypting Drives (SED) with Instant Secure Erase.

Although it did not reveal the precise details regarding the drives performance or any details regarding the number of platters, we are quite sure we will see at least a review or two quite soon.

QNAP, Synology and Supermicro have all announced support for the new Seagate 6TB HDD and should implement it in their cloud data center, NAS' and other products.

According to Seagate, the drive is currently shipping to select Cloud partners and resellers globablly and should be integrated in Seagate business and branded storage products as of this spring.
