New optical disc format coming in 2015

From Sony and Panasonic

Blu-ray, DVD and CDs have been around for quite some time, but when it comes to durability and storage capacity, the HDDs are still a preferable format. Sony and Panasonic are trying tofix this with a new optical disc format which will be able to safely preserve data, the Archival Disc.

Scheduled to come in 2015, it should be more resistant than current optical discs and even more reliable than an HDD. It will have a greater resistance to dust, moisture and temperature changes.

The disc should be double sided, each with three layers and capacities of up to 300GB at the beginning, while 500GB and 1TB is expected at a later date, judging from the roadmap from Sony's press release. The discs will be compatible with other platforms which is definitely one of the best features.

The quality of movies and games have been rising quite fast and there is certainly a requirement for higher storage needs. It is left to see if the new Archival Disc will change the fate of DVDs and Blu-Rays.
