We already wrote some information regarding the 15-core Xeon E7 v2 CPU, which Intel shared during the ISSCC, but today, the company has officially announced it and has saying that it will be available in more than 40 systems from 21 different vendor. In addition to higher core count, when compared to the Xeon E7, the new Xeon E7 v2 will bring some impressive improvements and features as well.
According to Intel, the Xeon E7 v2, which is based on the Ivy Bridge architecture, should bring twice the performance, three time more memory capacity, four times the I/O bandwidth and Intel's Data Protection Technology. The new Xeon E7 v2 will be available in 21 different models with up to 15 cores and will be able to populate 32-socket servers. According to Intel, these new Xeon E7 v2 parts are "fit for a variety of industries from retail and healthcare to banking and transportation."
You can check out the full Xeon E7 V2 lineup below, and while the 15-core SKUs reach 155W TDP run at 2.8GHz with 37.5MB of cache and 8GT/s QuickPath connectivity, there are a couple of low power SKUs with TDP of 105W. During ISSCC, Intel also talked about 40W SKUs but these should come at a later date. Intel's new Xeon E7 v2 lineup is split into three groups aiming 8, 4 and 2 socket scalable servers, 4 and 2 socket servers and 2 socket servers and while some parts might be the same most of them are mostly aimed at the 8, 4 and 2 socket scalable servers.
"Organizations that leverage data to accelerate business insights will have a tremendous edge in this economy," said Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Group. "The advanced performance, memory capacity and reliability of the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family enable IT organizations to deliver real-time analysis of large data sets to spot and capitalize on trends, create new services and deliver business efficiency."
As noted, Intel is already bragging that 21 system manufacturers around the world will announce more than 40 Intel Xeon E7 v2 based platforms, including Asus, Bull, Cisco, Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, HP, Huawei, IBM, Inspur, Lenovo, NEC, Oracle, PowerLeader, Quanta, SGI, Sugon, Supermicro, Unisys and ZTE, as well as with numerous analytics software vendors like Altibase, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Pivotal, QlikView, Red Hat, SAP, SAS, Software AG, Splunk, Sungard, Teradata, TongTech, Vertica and YonYou.
