AMD's recently introduced Mantle API certainly stirred up a lot of attention but it is now confirmed that Microsoft's upcoming Xbox One console will not support it. According to official statement from Microsoft, Xbox One, despite being based on AMD's hardware, will still focus on Direct3D 11.x.
In an official statement, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox One will support Direc3D 11.x with superset of Direc3D 11.2 functionality while other APIs like OpenGL and AMD's Mantle will not be available on Xbox One. The new DirectX 11.2 will bring support for "Tiled resources" which should let apps to more effectively manage available hardware resources.
In AMD responded via Tweet that saying that Mantle API was never designed to be offered on consoles but rather bring the same low-level API to PC. It will be compatible with DirectX HLSL that should simplify the porting from DirectX to Mantle, according to AMD.
AMD's Mantle API certainly sounds interesting and should definitely improve PC gaming, at least if AMD manages to push many developers to it.
