2013 must have been one of the toughest years in the company history of OCZ. On one side, the company wanted to develop away from the low margin consumer SSD business it helped building up itself and on the other side the company is pushing hard in the enterprisesegment to secure it's survival. According to a report over at TweakTown it now looks like OCZs consumer SSD business is up for sale and so far Toshiba seems to be highly interested.
In order to succeed in the SSD market and also to have a broad portfolio of great solid state drives, this deal looks like a really great opportunity for Toshiba. On the other hand it would allow OCZ to soley focus on the high margin enterprise market, where they have been pushing over the past two years.
Especially in the consumer segment OCZ is struggling these days, since the company suffers from supply shortages regarding NAND flash. Additionally the Toshiba 19nm NAND is superior, especially in terms of profitability over IMFT 20nm flash. This circumstance makes it really tough for OCZ to earn good money with their consumer SSDs. Basically, the company now has good products, but the supply chain is weak.
On another note also Toshibas business units for notebooks, tables, and PC's would hugly benefit. The company would finally have great SSDs in it's portfolio as well as a controller manufacturer. In the end Toshiba would become a much bigger player in the game and in a few years time, they might even be able to compete with Samsung. :
