Although it was pretty silent during the period when AMD announced its R9 and R7 series at GPU 14 event on the island of Hawaii, we noted on a couple of occasions that Nvidia will not sit on its hands and now it appears that response will come in the form of GTX Titan Ultra. According to rumors, the new GTX Titan Ultra might be based on fully enabled GK110 GPU and could be announced as early as October 16th/17th at Montreal event.
Although details are still not clear, the best guess is that we will see either a fully enabled GK110 GPU and the long awaited GTX Titan Ultra, or even possibly a dual-GTX 790. Although these ultra high-end graphics cards do not exactly bring a lot of cash to companies, they still have a lot to do with PR and marketing, because it is quite important to hold the performance crown as that fact sells more of mid-range graphics cards.
While GTX Titan is currently somewhat holding its ground against AMD's upcoming R9 290X, at least according to early benchmarks, Nvidia will need a faster graphics card in order to claim the performance crown. The fully enabled GK110 might get them there but the price will definitely be in the US $1000 range if not even over it.
In any case, we will know for sure as we draw closer to the 16/17th of October and rumored Nvidia Montreal event.
