Intel Core i7-4960X peak under the IHS

Coolaler forum member to blame

A forum member from Coolaler.com, that goes under the Toppc name, was brave enough to get the integrated heatspreader (IHS) off its US $1000 Core i7-4960X Ivy Bridge-E LGA2011 to reveal what kind of layer Intel decided to use this time.

Unlike the Core i7-3770K which had some problems since Intel opted for thermal paste, the Core i7-4960X LGA2011 CPU uses a strong epoxy/solder to fuse the CPU with the IHS. This solution has much better conductivity than a thermal paste but also makes it quite difficult for enthusiasts to get rid of the IHS.

While cutting out the adhesive layer was not hard, Toppc user from Coolaler.com did pull out a few components around the die so this "operation" is definitely not for those with weak heart or those that do not have impressive soldering skills, as after all, this is a US $1000 CPU.
