Although it did not make much noise at Computex 2013, Intel did its share of work with the 4th generation Core Haswell CPUs and 8-series Express chipset a few days earlier but has also decided to shed some light on the upcoming 22nm Atom SoCs for tablets and smartphones, as well as a new LTE modem.

Intel decided to use the Silvermont name for its new 22nm architecture and, according to Intel, we will be looking at a performance increase of up to 3x. The same platform can be also set to have a 5x energy saving when compared to current Atom SoC, depending on the actual need. The performance gain comes from better single-threaded performance as well as a fact that it will be available with up to 8 cores, although we will only see quad-cores for starters.

These chips will be used in tablets running both on Android and Windows OS, especially aiming at 2-in-1 tablets that should start to appear around the holiday season. These tablets will have a 10.1-inch screen, 30Wh battery for up to 8+ hours of battery life and a US $399 price tag. Intel also noted that we will be looking at 4k video decoding capabilities and great performance in 3D games although it did not shed any light on the GPU part of the SoC.

Intel also revealed some details regarding the 22nm Merrifield platform for smartphones and even showcased the reference platform but did not reveal any precise details on actual release date or design wins for such smartphones.

The last but not the least is the new XMM 7160 LTE modem that will be included with some Bay Trail chipsets but we are still not sure which ones.
